Guest masad Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Hello, I read somewhere that some upgrading is happening on the editors side, but I can't find any confirmation/announcement here at resource-zone (I am not an editor). When I submit, I no longer get the 500, I get 'Cannot find server'. Makes me think something is up... Any confirmation would be great, cause then I'd stop trying to submit every so often (when NA is sleeping, of course..) Regards - masad
rd400d77 Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Why not read the Forum Guidelines for the Site Submission Status thread and post there with URL and category submitted to so someone can check if it's in the unreviewed queue.
Guest masad Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Simple: I have no reason to believe that my site has been entered into the database - I have never received anything other than a 500 (to which there are threads that give advice) and the 'cannot find server', to which there is nothing. If you are telling me that the 'cannot find server' message means that I may or may not be in the 'unreviewed queue', then I will post in the site submission status forum. Mainly, look at it this way: *but first, let me say that I understand that the ODP and Dmoz are under a heavy load, both hardware and the editors. I respect that fact* Okay, now, in terms of usability, I certainly don't expect the 'cannot find server' to mean that 'maybe my site got in'. So I came here, I searched for something that outlined this phenomenon - nothing. I searched at WebMasterWorld (they have a forum on directories and a lot of members) - nothing. So I posted this thread with the hopes for an explanation - not only to help me but hopefully others with the same problem.
Alucard Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 The errors that you are getting are more than likely because of the work being done to upgrade all of our servers, which has been discussed in quite a few threads on this board, and on other outside fora as well. Thanks
Guest masad Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Thanks Alucard. which has been discussed in quite a few threads on this board As a suggestion, knowing that Dmoz is running rough, it would save some headaches - for both me and you - if there was a sticky thread with some form of update wrt what is happening at Dmoz. Some of us do search for these types of threads, as I did before posting - No one had mentioned this 'error' message in any other thread here or at WMW, as I said above. At any rate, we all know the unfortunate situation - Web designers have clients, clients want into Google, and a directory listing helps. I'm feeling a bit 'o heat right now, and would love to provide a definate answer, so: While this work is happening does the possibility exist that we may still get a liting into the queue? btw- thanks for the quick replies!
Meta theseeker Posted July 8, 2003 Meta Posted July 8, 2003 Submissions are getting through (though for about a week beginning July 13th, the whole submission, editor applications and editor server will be down). Some people do seem to have more problems than others, and I've never been certain why. Perhaps your ISP or your browser/operating system forces time outs earlier than the average. Anyway, we hope that all of this will be a thing of the past very soon--a few weeks or so, depending on how smoothly things continue to go. I'd like to add this error to my list in the sticky thread for submission problems, but I don't know much about the error. If you haven't tried to submit again since you got the error, can you let me know the site and the category you submitted too (in this thread), and I'll be able to see if submissions get through (which is a possibility as that error can result from a response time out, even if the submission got through).
Guest masad Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 theseeker, Thanks for the help. Whew, this may be embarassing: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Designers/Full_Service/M/ the Url is www.masadelante.com, which exists already in Spanish however this is for our English side... I tried a few times *gulp and blush*. Perhaps your ISP or your browser/operating system forces time outs earlier than the average. Fwiw - I tried with IE 6, Opera 7.11, and Moz; each returned the same problem. My ISP in Ya.com in Spain.
Meta theseeker Posted July 9, 2003 Meta Posted July 9, 2003 Looks like it wasn't submitted. I'm going to put together a bit of advice for this particular problem, but you shouldn't have to worry about submitting anymore, as I placed your site in the queue there while testing--only I submitted the direct link to the English version--and title and description for the submission are the meta tags. The editor will re-write those anyway. It can take a while in this area to be reviewed, however, so be patient.
Guest masad Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Above and beyond, theseeker! Thanks, if you need any more info on the error, post it here or send me a note and I'll get back to you.
brmehlman Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Our technopeople have a good understanding of the error, and expect it to be a thing of the past when the upgrade is done. But thanks for the offer, it's much appreciated.

totalxsive Posted September 7, 2003 Posted September 7, 2003 We know about the error, thanks. Please try submitting using another browser, or another computer if possible. The URL, title or description shouldn't have any reflection on that.
Guest crazed_canuck Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 hello, I have had the same problems when trying to submit my site to dmoz for inclusion. I have been trying at various times of the day (and night) without any luck. I am hoping that my submissions are not getting through as I don't want it to look like I am going crazy with the 'submit' button. Here is my information that I am trying to submit: Category: Regional: North America: Canada: Alberta: Localities: C: Calgary: Business and Economy: Internet: Web Design and Development Site URL: http://www.iappeal.ca Title of Site: iAppeal Calgary Web Design Site Description: Services include web design, graphic design, custom web programming, e-commerce, content management, and web site maintenance. Includes information on projects, services and clients. Email: info at iappeal.ca Any infomation on if I am in the cue for review or how best to submit my information would be appreciated.

If some one can add this site with the following details, I greatly appreciate. Site URL: http://www.simgraphics.com Title of Site: Simgraphics Systems Site Description: Simgraphics Systems has Content Casting System for Cricket and Baseball delivering upto minute rich live aniamted match details to web and wireless users
Meta hutcheson Posted September 12, 2003 Meta Posted September 12, 2003 It's a known problem. We don't have an estimated time for the fix.
Guest nola404 Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 I would suggest that the thread which mentions this problem be updated and a posting be put under the announcements section of the forum indicating that this problem exists with no know solution time. Many of us are frustrated, and it would help to at least post this information in an easy to find location with the current status. Thanks..
