Ghufran Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 Hello Administrators, Sorry if i disturbed you, but i just had a couple of questions. My first question is, . How are you today? My second question is, . I have successfully submitted my form a few days back, i have read all the Guidelines, and FAQ's ( Frequently asked questions ), I certainly do know it may take time and 'there is no guarantee,' you may or may not receive an email back, so i would just like to know if you have any knowledge of the status of my application ( Username Ghufran )? If not, no problem at all, but i will still thank you for your time. Kind regards, Ghufran Memon.
Ghufran Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 @MAURI. Sir, Thank you so much for the heads up, i certainly did not read this thread. @ Admins Please ignore this thread as fourteen days have not passed. Regards, Ghufran
Ghufran Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 When i go on, Resource-Zone> General Discussion> Becoming an Editor It says "Forum Guidelines - READ BEFORE POSTING" But when i click on it, a blank page appears. I'm guessing the link kind fully given by Mauri, is the same, as the thread topic suggests. Regards, Ghufran Memon.
RZ Admin Elper Posted August 28, 2011 RZ Admin Posted August 28, 2011 Yes, it is one and the same thread - and it has only one post in it. It's stickied at the top of this Becoming an Editor forum. If anyone else can't see it please let us know elper {moz}:curlie: All opinions expressed are my own, and do not necessarily represent the official point of view of the administration of either this forum or the directory.
Ghufran Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 I think it is a propagation issue, or problems with my browser. Now that i have read it, there would not be an issue for me. Kind regards.
Ghufran Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Hello everyone, Please do let me know if you have any update on my 'Editor Application process.' If not, no problem at all. Regards, Ghufran.
Ghufran Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 .Here is the category i 'applied' for. .The Editor name i provided in the form was, 'Ghufran.' .The date i submitted my form was, about fourteen days ago (I guess).
jimnoble Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 There have never been any validated applications from 'ghufran'. If you did indeed apply under that name, then the application's email confirmation transaction was probably never completed. Somebody with a slightly different name requested the same category on 2011-08-26. That's just 4 days ago, not 14. [137236] Editors are only permitted one account here. Do not apply again until your current application has been evaluated.
Ghufran Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Hey Jim, I extremely appreciate it, for you taking out the time to reply. I think the problem causing the date confusion is because of the 'email confirmation,' however, i have received an email from one of your worthy editors, stating my application is rejected. The comments were 'This category has a lot of spam.' I am not disappointed at all, i just hope there was a better reason, because i was very enthusiastic about editing in that category. Regards.
Meta pvgool Posted August 30, 2011 Meta Posted August 30, 2011 The comments were 'This category has a lot of spam.' I am not disappointed at all, i just hope there was a better reason, because i was very enthusiastic about editing in that category. I am prety sure there were more comments than just 'This category has a lot of spam.' No meta rejects an application with such a short statement. There are some subjects (categories) that atract a lot of spam, those subjects are in almost all cases not suitable for new editors. Those applicants are advised to pick another category to learn how DMOZ works. After some time, when they understand the workings of DMOZ and have chown that they are good editors, they can apply for the original category. This is to prevent harm to the directory and to prevent (mental) harm to the new editor. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
Ghufran Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Hey pvgool, The quote you stated, is exactly what i got. Thanks.
jimnoble Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 The quote you stated, is exactly what i got. Wrong answer . You were actually sent all this: From: noreply@dmoz.org Reply-To: staff@dmoz.org To: xxx@xxx.xxx Subject: Open Directory application - [editorname] Cc: admin@dmoz.org (Open Directory Project) Dear [Real Name], Thank you for your interest in becoming an Open Directory Project editor. After careful review, we have decided not to approve your application at this time. The most common reasons a reviewer will deny a new application include, but are not limited to, * Incomplete application. Insufficient information has been provided in some fields including reason, affiliation and/or Sample URLs. * Improper spelling and grammar. * Sample URLs are inappropriate for the category which one has applied to edit. They may be too broad, too narrow, completely out of scope, poor quality, or in a language inappropriate for the category. All non-English sites are listed in the World category. Applications for World categories that include sites only in English will be denied. Likewise, applications for World categories that include sample URLs in languages other than the one appropriate for the applied category will be denied. * Not properly disclosing affiliations with websites that are, or have the potential of being, listed in the category. * Titles and descriptions of sample URLs (and other information provided) were subjective and promotional rather than unbiased and objective. ODP editors do not rank or write website reviews. ODP editors provide objective and unbiased descriptions of websites and their content. * Self-Promotion. Application which leads us to believe that the candidate is interested primarily in promoting his/her own sites or those with which the applicant is affiliated. The ODP is not a marketing tool, and should not be used to circumvent the site submission process. If this is an applicant's motivation for joining, then we ask him/her not to apply. Editors found to be inappropriately promoting their own site will be promptly removed. Due to the large number of applications we get every day, we are unable to provide personal responses to every application or to respond to inquiries about why you were rejected. If a reviewer chose to provide additional comments to you, they will be given in the "Reviewer Comments" section below. Your willingness to volunteer is greatly appreciated and perhaps we will be able to utilize your talent in the future. Regards, The Open Directory Project Reviewer Comments: When making your application, we need you to suggest sites that are not already in the directory, so that we can assess your ability to find suitable sites. At least one of your site suggestions is already listed in this category, which makes it harder to assess your ability to find suitable sites. Also, this category attracts a lot of spam. While it is possible for a new editor to be accepted here, it will be very difficult. You may want to consider applying for a less spam-prone category.
Ghufran Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Hey Jim, Could you clarify, if all the comments are the problems in my application. Isn't the the paragraph stated above the reviewers comments automated? Do you mind if i may ask you a question? Regards.
jimnoble Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Could you clarify, if all the comments are the problems in my application. Without re-evaluating your application, I have no idea. Why don't you work it out for yourself? Isn't the the paragraph stated above the reviewers comments automated? It's standard but a reviewer can replace it or add to it if he feels it would be useful to do so/ Do you mind if i may ask you a question? In this thread, fine. Not by PM though.
Ghufran Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Yes Sir, i know we are not allowed messaging privately. I know the problem with my application was that, 'Suggesting one site, which already exists.' Now that i think this was the only problem, i also know, i would not be accepted as an editor in that category. My question is, Do you suggest, i resubmit a form in the same category, or will i be wasting my time? I again thank you, for taking out time to reply, to my questions. Good day sir. Regards.
jimnoble Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Do you suggest, i resubmit a form in the same category, or will i be wasting my time? I think you should follow the advice that you've already been given .
Ghufran Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 I would have done that sir, but i think i can do a great job, in the one i applied for before. I will give it a go one more time, maybe second time lucky?
jimnoble Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 maybe second time lucky? It's not luck at all. Your application will demonstrate your understanding of the category, your fluency in the category's language, your ability to select appropriate websites and your ability to describe them in accordance with our guidelines. If it succeeds in that, we'll accept you as an editor
Ghufran Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 You are absolutely correct Jim. I feel people learn from their mistakes, and i certainly have. I have taken all your sincere suggestions into effect, and i thank you for devoting your time to me. Thanks again Jim.
Ghufran Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Category Editor Name: Ghufran Date Applied: 31st August 2011
jimnoble Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Threads merged to keep the story together. Please don't start new threads on the same topic. Your application (under a slightly different name) is awaiting evaluation. [137497]
Ghufran Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Haha i always forget the name Thanks Jim : )
jimnoble Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 There's no need to ask every few days. By all means enquire again after 16th October if you've heard nothing.
