I used to run a small business and my website was listed in the dmoz directory. I no longer run the business and the website has been offline for some time. How do I go about getting it removed from dmoz? I don't like my old business name appearing, and I'm sure dmoz editors don't want broken links in the directory, so it would surely be best for it to be removed.

Go into the category the site is listed in and use the "Update URL" link at the top right. Put your wishes in the comment (and maybe copy them into the desciption field for better visibility). Update requests are usually handled with priority.

(But if the site is properly offline for some time, I would not be surprised if our tools already noticed and removed the entry)

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try that, but after about a month, the site was still listed. As you say, I assumed an update request would be handled quickly due to DMOZ's apparent commitment to maintaining good quality links, so am surprise this request has been ignored.

We have a special dedicated thread stickied at the top of the Quality Control forum here. If the site is offline but still listed in the directory (in the actual category as opposed to just showing up in search, which is out-of-date), you can post the details there.

Thanks for that. Just one concern though... if I post details of the site there, there will permanently be reference to my old URL in this forum, won't there? Is so, then there's risk of it being picked up by search engines. With the site no longer being active I am trying to remove any reference to it from the Internet.

You may have set yourself an impossible task - if you request it when posting in the QC thread, I'm fairly sure the url can be removed - we do that quite often in this forum ;)
