Guest vajrafist Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 I have been trying to get into the ODP for over 12 weeks now. My site is www.buddha-dharma.org I am an amateur web designer and I hope I didn't do something wrong, break any rules, or spam. I'd sure like to know why Im not getting listed before I try to submit again so I can correct the problem(if there is one). Thanks, -Dan K
motsa Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Re: Trying to figure out what I did to not get lis We are unable to give status checks this week. I'm moving this thread to the correct forum (the Site Submission Status one) -- come back after the servers are back up and bump this thread (give us a clickable link to the dmoz.org category you submitted the site to when you do). Someone will check on the site for you at that time. FTR 12 weeks is not a very long time to be waiting.
Meta hutcheson Posted July 20, 2003 Meta Posted July 20, 2003 I don't have to have access to the editor side of dmoz.org to answer parts of your question. 1) There is no "try" to get into the ODP. All you do, all you can do, is suggest that an editor review a certain site when they are looking for sites on a particular topic. Then wait until some volunteer editor volunteers to review it. That's all. No trying, no effort, no pain, no exertion involved. We suggest patience, the truth is, worrying yourself into a nervous breakdown or ulcerous attack is just as effective (if more painful). 2) If you submitted to a "web developer" category, I can tell you that there are thousands of unreviewed sites waiting in that area, and you may wait more than a year. (I can't guarantee that you will have to wait that long, but you should be prepared to.) 3) I can give you the usual advice: there may be 50,000 so-called- or wannabe- web developers in the world, but in your own hometown there are probably just a few -- so do submit your site to the "Business and Industry/Computers/Web Development" subcategory of your hometown category. You have that unique service to offer -- you can easily meet local people face to face -- and therefore your listing is more valuable there than in the generic Web-Development categories where you are just one of 20,000 sites. You will probably get listed more quickly, and that won't keep you from being listed in the generic category either, when an editor finally summons up the patience to tackle that backlog.
Guest vajrafist Posted July 21, 2003 Posted July 21, 2003 Re: Trying to figure out what I did to not get lis URL: www.buddha-dharma.org CATEGORY: http://directory.google.com/Top/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Buddhism/Lineages/ I have submitted this site several different times because I didnt understand about how long it can take and appropriate wait times for re-submission. I wont submit it again until Im sure an editor has had a chance to take a look at it, but I would like to know if it has been reviewed yet. Thanks -Dan
Meta hutcheson Posted July 21, 2003 Meta Posted July 21, 2003 Re: Trying to figure out what I did to not get lis It hasn't been reviewed yet. You picked a uniquely bizarre way of suggesting a description. No matter, the description is so far from guidelines-conformant that it won't affect the editor's deliberations anyway.
raggedyrugs Posted July 21, 2003 Posted July 21, 2003 Re: Trying to figure out what I did to not get lis >>>I wont submit it again until Im sure an editor has had a chance to take a look at it, but I would like to know if it has been reviewed yet.<<< Even when and editor has reviewed the site, please "don't" re-submit! If it gets listed, it will stay listed as long as there is significant and appropriate content for the category. If it gets rejected, re-submit "only" if the site is improved.
motsa Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 Re: Trying to figure out what I did to not get lis And BTW when I said give a clickable link to the dmoz.org category you submitted to, I meant give a clickable link to the dmoz.org category you submitted to, not a link to the directory.google.com one. You're lucky hutcheson is such a nice guy and answered your question even with the wrong link.
Guest vajrafist Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 Re: Trying to figure out what I did to not get lis http://dmoz.org/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Buddhism/Lineages/ O.K. thanks for your patience with a newbie and no resubmission even if I get turned down. no problem. -Dan
