Guest cyberbird Posted July 18, 2002 Posted July 18, 2002 Can I use this board to enquire about an update to a listing? The cat. is Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Financial Services: Taxation: Tax Specialists and we requested an update of the url to http://www.employeeshareschemes.co.uk/ on 20th June. Any help much appreciated.
Meta hutcheson Posted July 18, 2002 Meta Posted July 18, 2002 There's a very small backlog there. Actually, there's no backlog now. Since the URL change could be easily verified from the old URL, the update was a no-brainer.
Guest cyberbird Posted July 18, 2002 Posted July 18, 2002 hutcheson, Thanks for responding. Are you saying that because we updated the content at the old url to say the site had moved that there is no need to update the url at DMOZ? What should we have done? If we left the content then we would have had mirror sites. This was the reason for the update request, there were mirror sites and we wanted to rationalize to just one. The domain listed with DMOZ was proving very difficult to maintain because we had no control over it and it didn't support scripting. http://www.employeeshareschemes.co.uk/ was the preferred url. Given that the site listed with DMOZ doesn't now meet the requirements of DMOZ, what would you advise doing? Thanks in advance...
Meta hutcheson Posted July 18, 2002 Meta Posted July 18, 2002 Sorry, looks like we've been "divided by a common language" again. I meant, since the URL change you requested could be immediately verified by looking at the old ULR, it was obvious that the change should be made immediately....and so I immediately made it. You did exactly the right thing: put up the new site, changed the OLD site to redirect to the new one, and requested a URL change via "Update URL." If you had omitted the second step, we would NOT have been able to easily validate your request, since we couldn't easily tell whether someone else were trying to hijack your ODP listing (by changing the URL to point to their own site.) If you had omitted the THIRD step, we have tools to find and correct redirections, but they are not yet fully automated...so the update might have been made immediately, but not so quickly. The extra detail is not about your site, which is OK, but to educate all the forum lurkers who might someday need to move their own sites.
Guest cyberbird Posted July 18, 2002 Posted July 18, 2002 Many thanks, the thing that threw me was that a search on "employee share schemes" still resulted in the old category being shown.
donaldb Posted July 18, 2002 Posted July 18, 2002 Search results take longer to be updated. Notice the date at the bottom of the Search Results. This was the last time the search database was indexed. Ususally once, sometimes twice, a week.
