Guest jjohnstn Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 Overnight I found my server may have been blocked from using ODP data. Script does not work on my server, but works on a different server using a different IP address. I'm using phpODP and accessing the data live. I have all the proper attributes in place as explained on their "Using ODP data page". Is anyone else experiencing this problem? What should I do?
Meta windharp Posted September 12, 2003 Meta Posted September 12, 2003 ODP servers are terribly slow right now and time out a lot. This most likely is the whole problem. You could link to one of the offiial mirrors instead - ch.dmoz.org and de.dmoz.org. They are and will be some time behind and at the moment their synch is disabled, but they are preferred targets for bigger transfers to take load off our main system. Guest jjohnstn Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 I was using one of the mirrors (de.dmoz.org). I've tried them all (dmoz.org, ch.dmoz.org) and they all provide the same result, if they respond at all. Using de.dmoz.org on the other server/IP address works as it should. I've experienced timeouts before and this is different... the page loads with my headers and footers but the ODP data itself is missing. During a timeout, nothing loads.
totalxsive Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 Servers sucking up excess traffic from the ODP do get blocked from time to time. Try using a mirror or consider using the RDF dump instead.
Meta windharp Posted September 12, 2003 Meta Posted September 12, 2003 Hmmm... Since ch/de.dmoz.org are external servers, I doubt that someone gets banned from all of them, but I am not sure of this. Anyway, we could try to have a look into it if we had the URL of the site in question. Another guess: According to different sources there were DNS propagation problems in the last days, maybe this could be the case? And (if you didn't do it yet) you could check what return code it sends you, if any - if it is a "not found" or somethign similiar it might be a different problem. Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
Guest jjohnstn Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 *** since fixed: there was a problem with leaving a trailing slash of the URL when browsing the ODP directory. This made no difference before, so perhaps they changed some coding at their end. In any case, thanks everyone for their help and advice
Meta hutcheson Posted September 12, 2003 Meta Posted September 12, 2003 Thanks for telling us your resolution. That may well turn out to be a significant tidbit; it's been passed on to our techie.
