Guest jjohnstn Posted September 25, 2003 Posted September 25, 2003 Is it possibly to purchase or lease the ODP data feed. Not live, but generated from the RDF dump? Ideally, this would have all categories including non-English ones in a high-speed feed that could be incorporated into a web site.
giz Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 The single deliverable output of the ODP is the (sort-of-)weekly RDF dump (only "sort of" due to an ongoing bug in the data). (Or you can spider the mirrored data at http://ch.dmoz.org instead.)
pnm Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Perhaps more directly, no, you can't purchase or lease it, but you can use it for free according to the terms of the license.
Meta hutcheson Posted September 26, 2003 Meta Posted September 26, 2003 Well, actually we don't know whether you could purchase or lease it. You can have it for free if you comply with the terms of the license (as has been mentioned) It is conceivable, I suppose, that Netscape would sell it to you on some other, less restrictive terms -- the same sort of thing is done with some software (an issue that has been in the news lately, what with the SCO vs. IBM lawsuit.) So long as Netscape always gives it away for free under the license, they've kept the agreement with the editors -- even if someone offers them money to make some other arrangements in addition. You'd have to contact AOL/TW for that sort of thing. They'd probably ask, "why?"
Guest jjohnstn Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Well, okay. I know the data is available for free, but was wondering if there was a service out there that would download the RDF, clean up the data, and then provide a high-quality feed. Assuming there is not such a service, is there a good tutorial on how to use the RDF? How much storage space does it require (full RDF)?
Meta pvgool Posted September 27, 2003 Meta Posted September 27, 2003 Information can be found at http://rdf.dmoz.org/ See http://www.w3.org/RDF/ for general information about RDF From our FAQ Are there tools or enhancements available? Check out some of the sites located under the following category for enhancement tools: Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/Open_Directory_Project/Use_of_ODP_Data/Upload_Tools/ I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
