Guest SearchWerx Posted August 28, 2002 Posted August 28, 2002 Hi, Just need a little guidance on the appropriate category for my client at www.moonjar.com They make one product - an educational piggy bank for kids. It teaches them how to save, spend and share. I have a few categories marked out but realized that since they only have the one product, it was a little confusing to choose the right one. This is the one I'd felt was most appropriate: Kids and Teens: School Time: Social Studies: Economics This one deals with companies that have multiple products Shopping: Children: Educational Any other suggestions?
Meta hutcheson Posted August 28, 2002 Meta Posted August 28, 2002 Basically, since it is predominantly a shopping site, and not intrinsically educational (although to the right mind an apple can be educational....) start out by looking ONLY in Shopping categories. If you search for "piggy bank" or "piggy banks" at dmoz.org, it will pop up several possibilities. Is your product personalized? Is it ceramic? Otherwise it'll probably end up in "Home Decor". Alternatively, you could find a half dozen or so of your competitors (assuming there really is an industry that specializes in that) and propose a new category.
Meta mngolden Posted August 29, 2002 Meta Posted August 29, 2002 FTR, no sites whose emphasis are on purchasing are listed in Kids&Teens - if found, they are moved to Shopping. Looking through the site, I would recommend Shop/Child/Educ as the place to submit in Topical. You are also welcome to submit the site to the relevant category in Regional, which appears to be Seattle/Biz&Econ/Shopping. Sites submitted to Regional generally get listed more quickly than those in Shopping (it's quite backlogged).

It's when people decide to submit to multiple topical categories, rather than picking one, that it becomes an issue.
beebware Posted August 30, 2002 Posted August 30, 2002 But, remember, if you do decide to submit to your 'locality' (ie where you are physically based) ensure we've got some way of checking. If you haven't got any contact details on your site, then editors may be a bit reluctant to allow your site under Regional/ as they can't confirm the details. Also, if you ever consider becoming an editor, your 'locality' is always a good place to consider starting - and we always need good editors...
