holstein13 Posted September 6, 2002 Posted September 6, 2002 The category I submitted to (Top: Business: Electronics and Electrical: Wiring and Accessories) says "This category needs an editor." I submitted http://cableorganizer.com to this category several months ago and haven't heard anything since. I wouldn't mind becoming an editor for the category but my application got rejected. Probably for a conflict of interest. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.
rd400d77 Posted September 6, 2002 Posted September 6, 2002 Re: Can I submit to a category missing an editor? Oh yes. There are parent category editors who may choose to edit the subcategories and editors who have privileges to edit throughout the directory. Your site was moved to Shopping/Consumer_Electronics/ for review. Your site was deleted from: Computers/Hardware/Cables/ Your site was listed in Regional/
holstein13 Posted September 7, 2002 Author Posted September 7, 2002 Re: Can I submit to a category missing an editor? Thanks for your response. I looked at the Consumer Electronics category and I'm not sure where they'll fit me in under that. Maybe "Parts." That has been one of the problems I've had, What category should this go under? Hopefully, it gets resolved soon. Any idea when they may review it? Thanks again, --Paul Holstein http://cableorganizer.com
rd400d77 Posted September 7, 2002 Posted September 7, 2002 Re: Can I submit to a category missing an editor? No, I'm affraid not. The unreviewed queue isn't very deep there but I'm not really aware of editor activity in that area. You might just have to become an editor. Start be reading the ODP Guidelines (at least twice) especially the Editing Style Guidelines . Approving editor applications is not within the scope of my permissions but... There isn't really anything wrong with having affiliations, if you can demonstrate the abillity to be impartial in your listings and descriptions. Think about it, how could anyone ever edit their hometown in Regional/ and say they don't have any affiliations. For editor applications: open and honest. Titles and descriptions to the above referenced guidelines. Read it all. VJL
holstein13 Posted September 30, 2002 Author Posted September 30, 2002 http://cableorganizer.com My site was moved to http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Consumer_Electronics for review a few months ago and haven't heard anything. I think the section is missing an editor. Can anyone else look at my submission?
giz Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 It has been published in: http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Florida/Localities/P/Pompano_Beach/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/ . It was Deleted from unreviewed in http://dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Cables/ because your other, earlier, submission to http://dmoz.org/Business/Industries/Electronics_and_Electrical/Wiring_and_Accessories/ was moved to Unreviewed in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Consumer_Electronics/ where it is still waiting. If you also submitted there, then I guess there will now be two submissions awaiting review in that category. This is the peril of multiple submissions, some get deleted, others get moved around. If you are unlucky they all get deleted.
holstein13 Posted September 30, 2002 Author Posted September 30, 2002 Re: http://cableorganizer.com Eh? I didn't quite understand what you are trying to say.
holstein13 Posted September 30, 2002 Author Posted September 30, 2002 Re: http://cableorganizer.com What is your advice at this time? I only resubmit every two months. It's not as if I am resubmiting often. should I try another category that has an editor or should I leave it here and hope a general editor takes a look at it?
giz Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 So far, you should have found the ONE best category in the Topical (i.e. By Subject) categories (or World categories for non-English sites), and the ONE best category in the Regional (i.e. By Location) categories. You should have submitted once to each of these. If nothing happens within say 4 to 6 weeks, then you may submit again; just in case the submission was not received or has been lost. After that you should not resubmit again. Multiple submissions begin to look like spam. In any case, when editors look at a category they will clear all duplicate submissions within that category, keeping the newest, then add sites starting with the oldest. So, resubmitting puts you to the back of the queue each time. Since you already submitted to the one best category, submitting again to other categories just wastes editing time as the submission has to be moved back to the correct category, and then these multiple submissions all being sent over to the correct category begin to look like spam, and each one pushes your site review to the back of the queue. Advice: wait 4 weeks and ask again if you see no change. Either ask here in this thread (which will move to the top of the list every time a new message is added), or write to the editor of the category, or categories above. Whatever you do, please don't resubmit again.
totalxsive Posted October 1, 2002 Posted October 1, 2002 I'll try to explain giz's post better. You have a listing in Pompano Beach. The guidelines will allow you one other listing somewhere outside Regional. You originally submitted to Wiring and Accessories, but this submission was moved to Consumer Electronics where it is still waiting for review. You also submitted to Cables, but because your site was already waitong for review elsewhere, this submission was deleted. Therefore, your site is listed in the directory, but is awaiting a second listing in another category. Therefore, please do not resubmit as you are already 'on file', as it were, and we'll get to your site in due course. Hope this helps,
holstein13 Posted October 28, 2002 Author Posted October 28, 2002 Help, It's been over four weeks since I re-submitted my re-submission. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by submitting again. Is there anyone who can look at this and help me out?
beebware Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 I have moved your site down to the appropriate letter of the alphabar. Therefore it is currently awaiting review in Shopping/Consumer_Electronics/C/ with around 20 other sites.
holstein13 Posted October 28, 2002 Author Posted October 28, 2002 Thanks, (I think) Has there been any sites approved in these categories in the past 6 months? Since there is no editor, I'm afraid, it will never be listed. Of course, I hurt myself by re-submitting but, then again, who knew?
Meta kokopeli Posted October 28, 2002 Meta Posted October 28, 2002 It does not matter that there is not a specific editor listed in this category, as other editors do have access to it. I did some work in this category within the last few weeks and plan to continue in the near future. It is not a matter of never (if a site qualifies) but when .
holstein13 Posted December 17, 2002 Author Posted December 17, 2002 It's been a few months now. Any ideas if cableorganizer.com is still up for review and when it might get reviewed?
beebware Posted December 18, 2002 Posted December 18, 2002 It's still awaiting review with around a dozen other sites.
holstein13 Posted December 18, 2002 Author Posted December 18, 2002 Looks like in 3 months we went from 20 unreviewed to 12. Do you know if I am at the top of the list or bottom? Is there anything anyone can do in light of the long delay here?
uzs980 Posted December 18, 2002 Posted December 18, 2002 The best anyone can do is volunteer ... There's a lack of editors in this part of the directory. Many of the letter subcategories of Shopping: Consumer Electronics could use new editors.
holstein13 Posted March 14, 2003 Author Posted March 14, 2003 It's been over a year now since I've tried getting into DMOZ ordinary listings. Anybody have any idea when I might get reviewed?
holstein13 Posted March 26, 2003 Author Posted March 26, 2003 Can anyone help me answer the above question?
motsa Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Anybody have any idea when I might get reviewed? No. It's impossible to give that kind of estimate.
