Guest Posted September 17, 2002 Posted September 17, 2002 Hi, I am new to the web ( my first website ). I would like to find out the status of my site, www.carolinehepburn.com, as I have been trying to list it. After reading more about submissions, I think I need a little advice. Is my site under consideration? The category is: Shopping > Health > Beauty > Cosmetics > Makeup Artists. Would very much appriciate responce / advice.
Meta hutcheson Posted September 17, 2002 Meta Posted September 17, 2002 AAAAAAARGH! <reworded to remove expletives, profanity, scatology, and all other emotional reactions> Give a link to skip the Flash intro. Some people don't like Flash, because it does nasty things to their computers. Other people don't have the patience to watch completely uninformative blinking pixels (however implemented) for ... well for however long it took. Just do it, OK? It's not just non-atrocious web design, it's basic courtesy.
Meta windharp Posted September 17, 2002 Meta Posted September 17, 2002 Hmmm... I found one submission of this site moved from http://dmoz.org/Arts/Movies/Filmmaking/Makeup_and_Costumes/ to http://dmoz.org/Business/Arts_and_Entertainment/Media_Production/Personnel/Makeup (unreviewed, so still waiting for review) I didn't check if there is one waiting in the shopping category, since you did not provide a clickable link to get there. Guest orbiter Posted September 17, 2002 Posted September 17, 2002 It seems like an editor may have a hard time reviewing the site. I tried to look at on two machines with P1000+ 128 Megs of RAM on both broadband and dialup connections and both computers crashed before anything showed in the browser. It might be helpful to editors and users to slim down the homepage.
dstanovic Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 orbiter, Works fine in both Opera6.x and IE6.x here - better check your systems <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> Dave
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Site is OK with Mozilla 1.1 and a DSL connection. Maybe the problems are related to a Javascript disabling mouse right-click, but I'm not sure about this. By the way, this 'trick' is completely useless for protecting images because anyone can retrieve them in the browser cache. <img src="/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" />
Guest orbiter Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Not sure what it was but did get it to load.
giz Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Gives my browser a hard time. Not sure if that is something to do with the Javascript, or because it doesn't validate [ Validation Results ]. Valid HTML will be fairly easy to achieve, and might cure the problem. Worth trying first as an easy option. Valid HTML is _NOT_ a requirement for a listing in the ODP, but anything that hinders the reviewing editor in looking at the site, will obviously delay the listing process. Some place like http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/ should be able to provide detailed help about tidying code and correcting errors if you get stuck.
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Hi Dave, thank you for checking that out. Do you have suggestions of things I should modify? Cheers, Caroline
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Thank you for your time. I guess there is not much you can do to protect your images, just trying to do what I can. Cheers, Caroline
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Hi again, actually I am not sure the problem is not with my server. Do you know if which server you use makes a difference? Thanks again for your time. Cheers, Caroline
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Thank you so much for your responce, I really appreciate it! Cheers, Caroline
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Hi there, There is a -skip intro- bar on my flash page. I am not sure if you can see it on all brousers. Did you not see it? What did you see? What do you mean flash does nasty things to some computers? You seem frustrated by my site. Is it just the flash?
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Which browser do you use? Thanks again, Caroline
Meta jazz Posted September 18, 2002 Meta Posted September 18, 2002 Nothing personal to Caroline, but I think the thread has gone beyond its usefulness in the "Site Submission Status" forum. The status is known. There are better places to chat about getting a site to load properly (at all) across browsers and getting a Skip Intro option.
Meta hutcheson Posted September 18, 2002 Meta Posted September 18, 2002 I've looked with Mozilla (Netscape 6.0) and the Infernal Exploder (6.0). Flash was loaded on both (as you might guess, the IE with Flash was NOT on my personal machine.) The "skip intro" did not appear on either one.
Guest Posted September 18, 2002 Posted September 18, 2002 Thank you for your reply, I will try to fix that. Cheers, Caroline
motsa Posted September 19, 2002 Posted September 19, 2002 In case is helps you track down the issue, I got an error on my Mac telling me I didn't have enough memory to load Shockwave (note: I have a lot of memory allocated to IE and am able to view other Flash intro pages with no trouble).
