Are there any definitive, honest answers yet?

Ah ha :icon_idea obviously the tinfoil model works fine and They are trying to get us to switch to something that looks better but doesn't work. Nice try - especially the spelling 'mistake' designed to convince us you are a normal guy instead of an agent for Them.

I'd be inclined to view Rich's stance on things as highly informed opinion personally. Root access and Admin level rights means access to things mere mortals can only dream of. ;)

Oh, I wouldn't put too much stock in someone who values money more than principle, oneeye. Or someone who starts a project like the ODP, with volunteers working for free, and then sells them out for personal profit.

Kind of hard to have any credibility with folks like us, don't you think? Only with ex editors who have an axe to grind, ;) .

Voltaire had it backwards.

I agree with the accusation I just deleted above this post, but I deny the poster the right to say it here.

Read what he says and you will see he is quite out of touch (example 'I ran a scan of the forums to estimate active editorship'- most of us know that these numbers are available in the ODP reports). In fact its taken him this long to comment with an article half of which is reminding people of who he was in the scheme of things. The rest is things that have been already said by other people elsewhere over the last few months.

Sorry, oneeye, we're not biting. Given the lack of responses to his recent blogs, its a not well visited blog that could do with the extra traffic from drive by link dropping. Sadder but truer than your analysis.

regards

No, no, no, Eric. They are just trying to make a quick profit in the unstable copper market while taking advantage of the tinfoil (inferior material) hat crowd. :D

I was contacted by a dmoz meta-editor to weigh in on the current outage, and future odp direction. I sent a reply, but have also posted my expanded comments publicly.

I suspected something a long the lines. One day I went to login at Zeal and there was a message thanking me for my contributions.

Zeal said:
We thank you all for being a part of the Zeal community and contributing your time and knowledge to the Directory. LookSmart has decided to focus internal resources on objectives that are more central to our business strategy and Zeal.com has been shut down. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you again for contributing to the Zeal community

So just ad the .com to it an you can see for your self.:(

I did make a polite comment about adding my site to the looksmart, wisenut directory as I felt I did the right thing by listing other sites and not mine hoping one day mine would have been added by a fellow Zealot.

To make a long story short I finally got listed in the looksmart search results now. The wisenut bot does stop buy from time to time.

You can donate to the upgrade if you like. :D

Typing error? I think not. (Just poor spelling) lol

It is close to Christmas and I dont mind giving to people who could use some thing I have not a need for.

I will donate an old working cdrom if you want it I have two old machines, I don't want any thing for them, just out of the garage. they take up space.

I don't think you will need drivers as most OS's can detect and install them as need be.

There is no warranty that's why i will send you both one goes just use the other.

From experience I have in my many years as an IT expert I would call this a normal downtime for such a major dissaster.

Wow. That's a stunning statement. I guess I've been working for the wrong company all these years! 3 months and counting to recover a crashed database is normal? I wish my CEO's expectations of me were that low, I could come in for 30 seconds a day and do an entire weeks worth of work!

You're welcome to look for another job. I wouldn't hire you, but, then, I'm not a hiring manager.

Why do you think "a crashed database" was the problem DMOZ had?
The public database was recovered within 2 days. The rest of the time was spend on solving the real problem.

Do you have permission from the Supreme Commander to disclose shortages?

I thought not - submit yourself for immediate recycling!

No, no, DesertJules. As an editor your should know that we don't call it "submit" it is called "suggest". ;)
