NO, please submit the main URL only to the single best category. An editor may choose to list in multiple categories if he finds good unique content.

No - means very seriously - absolutely not.

http://www.dmoz.org/add.html

Identify the single best category for your site. The Open Directory has an enormous array of subjects to choose from. You should submit a site to the single most relevant category. Sites submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories may be rejected or removed.

What bobrat said. Please suggest only the root URL, probably to a category somewhere in the Shopping/Health tree. In case there is exceptional content in different areas, the decision to list the site in several different categories rests with the editor.

I only looked very briefly at the site, but it seems unlikely to me that it will be listed at all. However, that will be up to the editor who actually reviews it.

and why shouldnt it be listed/.......by the time it gets reviewed (prolly 6 months down the line in my experience) it would be 3 to 4 times the size full of mainly origninal content

If it were reviewed now, it wouldn't be listed. Perhaps if it were reviewed 6 months from now, it might be -- but we don't have crystal balls, here.

(Even those that do have crystal balls ask in this forum for status, so perhaps we're not that far behind the curve.)

That's like a big gambling game. I have sites submitted that the owner assumes won't get reviewed for several months. The problems is that sometimes I review sites within a few days - so that's not a good assumption - since they get instant rejection. Secondly, 90% of submitted sites get a quick preview from me within a few days, even though I'm not reviewing them, and the same thing happens - instant rejection if it's clear ths site has limited content ur is under construction.

All site owners intend to add content - but it often does not happen. I've seen sites from four years ago, with pages saying "more content will be added next week". Meanwhile they have been sitting taking up deadspace.

I am submitting to this thread as it is about an issue I am interested in. I know that certain sites are in multiple categories, and it is the ODP editors choice to do so, but, assuming my site, http://www.directorygold.com, gets listed in the category I submitted to, how do I get it checked out for relevance to and inclusion in other categories, probably edited by different editors? Currently, I have several subsections of my site,http://www.directorygold.com/more/article, http://games.directorygold.com and http://scriptsgold.directorygold.com with more being added that are not appropriate to the main category I am waiting for review from. Whilst I do not think at present that these subsections contain enough content to merit another listing yet, they are being added to, and, should all go to plan, will have significant content of their own

I'd concur. In fact it is unlikely that the directory would be listed at all in its current state as it does not have enough useful listings to justify an entry in dmoz.org at this time.

In general, unless your directory is in a specific field you should be looking for 50,000+ listings as a bare minimum to be even considered for a listing.

Hello here.

Here is my question: I have a commercial website since 1999 that sells digital classical sheet music for instant download:

http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/

and I am correctly present in the following category on DMOZ:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Music/Sheet_Music/Classical/

Well, my question is: since my website offers also free classical MIDI files (currently over 3500) and we can be considered as one of the 3-4 major resources on the web for classical MIDI files, do you think my website could be get listed in the following category too?:

http://dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Sound_Files/MIDI/Classical/

I am asking this because one of our competitors have exactly our same content (but less material) and they have their website listed in three different categories:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Music/Sheet_Music/Classical/
http://dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Styles/Classical/Sheet_Music/
http://dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Sound_Files/MIDI/Classical/

I submitted our website in the MIDI/Classical category several times, but we have never been considered. We also would fit in the Arts/Music/Styles/Classical/Sheet_Music/ obviously, exactly as our competitor did.

Any idea is very welcome.

Sincerely,
Fabrizio Ferrari

You may submit to one, and only one, topical category.

Sometimes editors will decide that a site has sufficient merit to be listed more than once. That is an editor decision and editor action - if you did it, it is highly likely the suggestion would be rejected instantly as a duplicate.

Sometimes an editor here will suggest that you submit the site to an additional category (in highly specific instances). Then, and only then, is it permissible for a submitter to make that extra submission, i.e. with editor consent.

Hope that helps

Perfectly clear oneeye. Thanks.

So, it's my understanding that to have my site listed in more than a category is purely matter of fortune. Does my perception is correct?

Thanks again.

No, it's a matter of editorial judgement based on long-tested guidelines and standards, and the quality, quantity, uniqueness, etc of the site under review. Of course relative standards of sites and editorial policies change over time and sites that at one time might have been considered invaluable resources and suitable for multiple listings may not receive the same treatment today. Eventually, when they are re-reviewed that situation may be corrected.

oneeye, thank you for your reply. I understand.

I am wondering only one thing relative to your affirmation: why those old submitted sites, that ones that in the past have been considered invaluable resources and suitable for multiple listings and that today may be (and same of them are actually) less important than others are still in the index? Shouldn't the index keep updated and maintained at high quality levels? Otherwise would become simply a depository of old sites... like a museum.

Just my thought and I'd like yours about this.

Fabrizio.

Having compelling content is the essential first step.

Yes, that's true. I am an expert in my field and I can assure you that there are new sites today in some category that are not listed while there are still inside old sites that have been not updated since 2000 and have much less value than the new ones... that's a problem for an index, I guess. A human index like DMOZ should have anyway an update and valuable index.

Thank you.

Fabrizio.

Editors do a mixture of tasks including listing new sites and quality control on existing listings. As there are waits for new suggestions to be considered, sometimes days sometimes years, so there are waits for quality control on existing listings too. As long as a site continues to deliver value after listing then it is a lower priority than many other things we can do, dead links and hijacks being at the top of the list. The important thing is that for new listings it is the guidelines and practice in force at the time it is reviewed that count, not what may have been in the past.
