Indeed. I personally switched from phpBB to SMF [simplemachines.org], which is also free, and found SMF to suit me better.

SMF isn't bad. Of late I have come to appreciate the simplicity of punBB [pubb.org].

YaBB also gets the job done quite reasonably, without the extra requirements of php etc.
