Re: Help for changing the description

Thanks windharp. I understood that "RDF pushed" status reveals that an update has been made to DMOZ directory on the specified date.

Is there any specific method to view whether a category has been updated or not. Or do we have to download the whole file and search for the category <Topic r:id="category name">

Also, In the tags.html file, I could not understand what it means by

"structure kt-structure and netscape-structure"

Similarly for

"content kt-content and netscape-content"

Does this mean that these are the categories that have been updated. Or there are more than these.

What is the difference between these files.

What I found was:

"content" contains all sites starting from top (adult sites)

"kt_content" contains information on sites listed in Kids & Teens section & subdirectories,

"brasil_content" contains info on
Top/World/Português/Regional/BrasilTop/World/Português/Regional/Brasil

"netscape_content" contains Top/Netscape (but I could not find a similar category on DMOZ) and so on

Are these files named after the categories to make them user_friendly.

Also,

Can you please help me specify in how much time period, Google directory and others start taking up of DMOZ data and can it be judged through RDF dumps.

Sorry for such a long message.

Thanks & Regards

Re: Help for changing the description

the normal data is in "content"

The Kids&Teens directory is a bit special, it contains age tags and is prepared for restricted access by age groups. Thats why it is put into a seperate file

"Netscape" files are not interesting for anyone but netscape, its a nonpublic part od the directory used by some versions of the netscape browser.

At the moment there are no datafiles for parts of the directory, sorry. Only way to look when a category has been changed would be to look at the category itself, the "last change" date is at the bottom.

For looking at categories, preferably use the mirror at http://ch.dmoz.org/ which is about a day behind but gives you a much better performance. (It is a "public side only" mirror so it does not interfere with editing)

For the times downstream users need for updating their data: Thats not our concern, its fully up to them. We provide a new RDF dump every week (if no problems occur), they have to download it themselves. Even Google <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

No, not the directory updated, just the RDF file.

The directory at dmoz.org is updated within minutes of each edit taking place. Once your site appears within a category, then you are in the directory. The RDF dump is usually produced about once per week. There were no RDF dumps in October, November or December of last year. The first one of 2003 was in early February and there have been four in total since then. Only when an RDF dump has been produced can all of the other sites using ODP data (of which, Google is just one of hundreds) update their directory listings. (However, there are some other sites that spider the ODP site and make their own listings from that, without using the RDF dump at all).

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Thanks Cok, for redirecting me to "Using ODP Data". I went through the discussions and found many face same problems while using ODP data.

Many Thanks windharp for answering to my queries once again. Thanks for suggesting http://ch.dmoz.org/. This was a very clear explanation. I really appreciate.

Thanks &amp; Regards

Thanks Giz for your valueable addition to the discussion.
No, not the directory updated, just the RDF file
.

But, according to senox,
Update of the search database depends on the update of the RDF dump.

and I too have experienced that while my site was accepted and listed under the category, it was not showing up in the search results in the initial 15-20 days of acceptance.

<img src="/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" /> So, what was the reason.

I am confused. Please help.

If you're talking about showing up in Google search results, we have no control over when and how often Google updates its directory and/or search engine with ODP data. The RDF is out there. Google will grab it when they feel like it (usually once a month, I believe) and you'll eventually see your site there.

Re: Help for changing the description

Hi motsa,

I am sorry you didn't understand. Actually I was talking about searching in DMOZ with the company name. Though, the site was appearing in the category, immediately after acceptance, it was not coming in the DMOZ search for initial 15-20 days. (even before when I requested for a change in description). Now, its appearing fine.

Now I think, I am clear.

Re: Help for changing the description

Your site is in the directory as soon as the editor adds it to the public-side database.

Your site isn't added to the ODP search results until the next RDF dump is produced (should be approximately weekly, now that the RDF system is working again).

However, you may be expecting something of the ODP search that it isn't designed to do. The ODP search is designed to find the best categories that match your search criteria. It isn't really designed for finding sites. Yes, a few sites are returned in the results, but the main thing you should be looking at, is the list of categories. If you are looking for a site about widgets, the ODP search should find all of the categories that contain such sites. You should then browse the category to look at all the sites on that subject. The ODP is a directory, not a search engine; and the ODP search is designed primarily to point you in the direction of the correct categories to browse, rather than listing a whole bunch of sites in the search results.
