http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hand-me-downs

I really could use some help getting my site listed. I have made many attempts over the past 8 months and to my knowledge my site has never been listed on dmoz.

Originally I submitted several requests to be listed under the following category:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Antiques_and_Collectibles/Textiles/Linens/

I have also submitted several requests to be listed under the following category as another option when I was not able to get listed under the other category and I also expanded my inventory so I felt this category was more appropriate.

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Antiques_and_Collectibles/Varied_Merchandise/

These two sections do not have an editor to my knowledge. I have even tried going to the next level with an active editor and requested assistance. I did not receive a response but that is understandable, I imagine the editor was already flooded with requests for submission and assistance.

If my site was rejected for some reason I am not aware of it. If I need to make corrections or changes I will.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Carol

From Ruby Lane : "We have no open shop named hands-me-down." Are you sure you provided the correct URL?

Non-existing shops are unlikely to be listed anywhere.

Ah, that's better.

One submission is sitting in Textiles/Linens, I couldn't find any in Varied_Merchandise. To what letter did you submit?

It looks like two of your previous submissions have been rejected/deleted, either because you submitted several times to the same category, or because they were considered inappropriate deeplinks.

Re: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hands-me-down

You might find http://dmoz.org/Shopping/desc.html useful. Since the site above is a deeplink, I'm not surprised it was refused placement - you are better off submitting http://www.rubylane.com to the single most appropriate category, and then waiting for it to be reviewed.

[opinion, not related to editing] And your site does that annoying thing where it automagically maximizes it in my face when I minimize it and look at another browser window. [/opinion]

...well it does make editing a tad tricky when you can't easily get to the editing screen .

Not sure about that one. This situation may be similar to the Yahoo Stores. Rubylane hosts several (independent?) shops, each one having its own rubylane deeplink. The main URL and about 50 stores are listed, but it's decided case by case.

Ok........I am of the same opinion. I am an independent shop. RL acts as the host for my site. Any suggestions?

After rereading the guidelines for submitting a site, including the description I am concerned I may have unwittingly violated a rule somewhere. Should I request to delete the last submission requesting inclusion and start over. I certainly don't want to get banned before I even get started.

Just in case anyone is still looking for the correct link it is as follows: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hand-me-downs

Thanks for the continuing discussion and input.

What I can do for you is to move your site to the correct unreviewed queue if you want. Or did you make any mistake in your title/description?

Please let me know :
- where the submission you'd like to change is sitting
- what you want to change (other category/title/description of your submission)
- where else you have submissions waiting (I'll delete those ones)

We should end up with one submission waiting for review in one category. This doesn't guarantee your site will be listed at all, or that it will be listed in the category you submitted to, with the title and description you suggested. The decision will be taken by the editor who reviews your site. All I can do here is to help you if you think you made a mistake somewhere.

Thanks so much for the help.

This is where I believe my submission is sitting:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Antiques_and_Collectibles/Textiles/Linens/

I might have one here but I am not 100% positive. If memory serves me I kept going back to the textile/linen category.

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Jewelry/Estate_and_Collectible/

The following is what "should" be submitted for title, url and description.

Shop Title:
Hand Me Downs Vintage Fabric, Linens and Jewelry

Shop url:
http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hand-me-downs

Shop description:
Offering antique and vintage fabric, patterns, linens, costume and fine jewelry, china and small collectibles.

Either one of the following categories would be fine. Neither one has an editor.

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Antiques_and_Collectibles/Varied_Merchandise/H/

or

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Antiques_and_Collectibles/Textiles/Linens/

What happens if there is not an editor for the category?

Whether the category has a named editor or not, then any editor in any of the parent categories further up the tree will be able to do it.

The submitted Title and/or Description will probably be trimmed a little (probably the Title). We don't usually repeat words from the Title in the Description, especially those that may be regarded as "keyword lists".

Re: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hand-me-downs/

No problem. Whatever works. Thank you very much.

Re: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hands-me-down

I hope I am doing this correctly. I have trying to post to a thread already going on this subject.

Would I be outline if I were to ask how long it might take for someone to review the my submission request. Just a rough idea of how long it might take....I realize you can make no promises but ...... any tidbit of hope would be appreciated. Carol, thanks for help and time.

Can't even guess for you when it'll be, since volunteer editors are like cats. They do what they like. And only do what they don't like very slowly if at all.

Anyway, the bottom of the public page of the cat currently shows "Last update: 12:30 PT, Wednesday, May 29, 2002" . When that date changes will give you indication that some work has been done in the said cat, and your site is moving along in the unreviewed queue.

Re: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hands-me-down

Oh boy, what if I changed it to a regional category with an editor?

Re: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/hands-me-down

Forget whether or not there is an editor, if you have an address people can actually visit to order/pickup/return goods to you should be able to list in both a Regional and a Topical category. A pure online business is not entitled to a Regional listing though.

By the way as a purchaser I'd be wary of the 'Address Will Be Provided With Purchase ' anyway, maybe most people wouldn't bother, but checking shows that the Chapel Trail, FL doesn't agree with the Pembroke Pines, FL I found. Just an observation, trust in online transactions is important

Most regional categories are far less backlogged than the rather spam prone shopping cats, so, if you qualify, you would probably find the Regional listing to be the first of the listings reviewed.

OK, I am still sitting in stall mode, not added yet. Please help.

I would like to change my submission category to:

Business: Textiles and Non-wovens: Textiles: Fabrics

Is this a possibility? Please help. Thanks, Carol

The site is In My Express Opinion, not appropriate for a Business listing. It is a retail outlet for consumers, and as such belongs in Shopping.

If you have a storefront where people can walk in and buy things, then you should make sure the website mentions it, then (please!) submit the site to the appropriate Locality category in Regional.
