Hi Jim,
just out of interest, do you have an estimate of the typical length of time for evaluation? I submitted to become an editor on 21st November (/Recreation/Travel/Lodging/Directories/) (mellymel). I know you guys have started to evaluate and accept some submissions again and I'm guessing you have months and months of applications to sift through before you get to ones that were submitted over the last few weeks, but if you had any estimate it would be really appreciated - it would also allow me to answer similar posts on here :) Of course, I understand if its a completely impossible thing to estimate, I'll just be patient and continue to find suitable sites that I can add to my category if I am lucky enough to be made editor.

Thanks and have a great Christmas,
Mel

No because it depends upon the category and the availability of volunteer meta editors who feel competent to evaluate applications for it.

Incidentally, we've been accepting editors since again since December 2010 (after a hiatus during the introduction of the DMOZ 2.0 back end in August 2010)

You've selected a particularly spam prone category and few metas would think it suitable for a beginner.

Thanks Jim - I hope that a DMOZ meta is willing to give me a chance, as my main interest and experience lies in hotel websites and in usability, so I feel I do have a lot to offer that category. But if my application is rejected, I'll apply for a different category and try to prove myself as an editor. Thanks for your time and help.

Morning Jim,
sorry to keep bothering you, but I've now had a reply back and, as we discussed previously, my application was rejected due to the spammy nature of the category. Obviously, I'm still keen to become a DMOZ editor and, while hotel accommodation website is where my experience primarily lies, I'm more than happy to prove myself as an editor on a less competitive category. I've been looking at http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Concerts_and_Events/Guides/ - its a category that doesn't have many listings at the moment, but one which I think has scope to grow and become a great category in the directory. I was just wondering if you'd be able to advise on whether or not this category is seen as spammy, or one that is too popular to apply to for a beginner? I'm looking forward to putting 100% effort into my application and hope that I can find some great websites out there that would make great additions to this category.

Many thanks
Mel

Thanks Jim, I've just applied to http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Concerts_and_Events/Guides/ - hopefully its a less spammy category. It currently only contains a small number of websites in the category (and its sub categories), but I think it is a category that has got enough scope to enable me to gain great experience as a DMOZ editor. Thanks again for your help and advice through this process,

Best wishes
Mel

Hi,
sorry to hassle this forum, but I was just wondering if someone could check the current status of my editor application please?

I applied for http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Concerts_and_Events/Guides/ on 14th December, having received a rejection email on my prior application, due to, quite fairly, having picked a category that attracts a lot of spam. I'm hoping that http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Concerts_and_Events/Guides/ is a better choice - its currently only got 5 entries (ignoring subcategories), and one of those entries (Mojam) is for a website that no longer exists, so I'm really keen to tidy the category up and add some new relevant sites.

I know the guys at DMOZ have a big backlog of applications, so mine is probably in the middle of that pile somewhere, but after six weeks being patient, I thought I'd check on the status.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Many thanks
Mel

It avoids confusion if we keep a conversation to a single thread. Threads merged.

Your application is awaiting evaluation.

Hi Jim,
I hope all is well. Just wondering if you could possibly check if my application is still awaiting evaluation please? I applied on 14th December and still haven't heard anything back - I know it can sometimes take a little time for you guys to get around to evaluating the application, but my previous application was handled much more quickly, so I'm just getting worried that this one has been overlooked.

Look forward to becoming an editor (hopefully!)

Thanks for your time and help,
Best wishes

Hi All,
its now been 7 months since I applied to become an editor for http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Concerts_and_Events/Guides/ but I've still not heard anything. Would it be possible for someone to check my status please, just to make sure that it is still in the queue awaiting evaluation? Becoming an editor was one of my experience goals for 2012, but I'm quickly running out of months!

Thanks for any help/suggestions you can provide,
Best wishes
Mel

It's still awaiting evaluation. Meta editors are volunteers too so we can't predict when your application will be processed or the outcome.

Well, I hope he gets it because there are some severe problems in that cat. Like,

1. Mojam is closed as well as 4 sister listings of Musi-cal.com

2. The Asia listing is down for weeks, maybe forever.

3. In the UK section, it,s What,s on Bristol, not What on...

3a. Riffs Online is offline

3b. Oclassical is also offline

Hi,
just wondering if my application is working its way closer to the front of the queue? I hate pestering this forum, but after 9 months of waiting, and a lot of boredom in between jobs over the summer, I'm really keen to make more use of my time and edit and improve the category. As wbeckman3 pointed out earlier in this thread, there were many problems with the category I've applied to (/Arts/Music/Concerts_and_Events/Guides/). While Elper did fix those, I'm certain there are lots of related, great quality websites that should be considered for addition, to make the category as useful as it can be for visitors.

Again, apologies for the impatience - I realise that some day I may become a meta-editor too, and then I'll probably fully appreciate the number of applications you guys have to deal with!

Thanks
Melanie

It was reviewed today (coincidence - most meta's do not read this forum)

Thanks for your reply and its great to hear that someone is reviewing it (I would say great minds think alike, but mine isn't so great! :) ) - I haven't actually received an email yet to say if the application has been accepted or rejected - can the review take a number of days before a decision is made?

Thanks
Melanie

An email was send telling you it was rejected. Please check the spamfilter of your emailaccount. Especially hotmail is known to block emails from DMOZ. We even advise editors to switch to other providers if they want to receive communciations from DMOZ.

Hi,
oh I'm absolutely devastated - I really thought I was ideal for that category, and after already being rejected last year for picking a category that encouraged a lot of spam (and therefore not good for a beginner editor), I thought I had chose a better category, one that aso interests me, and that my application was thorough and perfect for becoming an editor. I've checked my email and strangely its not in Inbox or Spam, so I have no idea of the reason why my application was rejected - is there any way you can find out at all please, so that I can try once again? Guess I'll have to make becoming a DMOZ editor my 2013 aim now :-(

Thanks
Melanie

Email was sent to the email address that you applied from but, as we all know, email isn't 100% reliable. I've sent you the text of the reviewer comments by PM at this forum.
