I have to agree with pvgool on this one. Sure, competition can and may sometimes delist others (it's human nature to protect your own, I guess). But then again, it's easy to make statements like this and accuse others of such behaviour without having to support such statements. If you think about it, some categories would then have 2-3 listings that the editors own / run and the rest would get kicked out. That's not what I've been seeing on DMOZ, though.

Wow, what a way to jump on the poor guy for expressing his concerns about possible abuse of editing power within Dmoz. If I go out and buy locks for my house, does that make me a burglar?

To paraphrase your own statement, when a number of folks are expressing their concerns about possible abuse and are immediately met with responses like this, it tends to tell more about the person responding in this way than the people expressing their concerns.

Perhaps you were just having a bad day but that's really pretty sad.

My two cents,

No

But if you go out and accuse everybody in the neighborhood of being a burglar -- that DOES make you a slanderer.

But you've done worse, you've accused everyone in the neighborhood of being a burglar, even when YOU HAVEN'T SEEN A BURGLARY, simply because you believe your house MIGHT BE BURGLARABLE.

If you have evidence of actual abuse -- not speculation about potential abuse! -- we'd like to hear it. If you have, for instance, a pattern of listable sites which "compete" with some particular site removed -- then, by all means, say something. You won't have to go around slandering everyone. In fact, if you have evidence, you don't need to accuse ANYONE. Just give the evidence.

You'd be amazed how much better "actual evidence" is received, than slander based on uninformed speculation about "potential" actions.

Go find the pattern. Until you have the pattern, you cannot possibly know anything. One site is not a pattern. How stupid would it be, for a dishonest editor to let a dozen or three competitors in, then remove just one single competitor! What a waste of a dishonest life!

Did you not understand my reply of a few weeks ago?

You might have misunderstood our objectives and how we operate here. ODP is a volunteer organisation building a directory as a hobby. Editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.

Some volunteer will process your listing suggestion in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

Now please, stop expecting/demanding special treatment because it's unlikely to be productive.

First you accuse everyone in the room of being corrupt, and then you ask for a special service that (according to the forum Terms of Service) isn't given to _anyone_?

There are three possible reasons for a site not being listed.

(1) It's not eligible for listing. Experience tells us this is nearly always the reason, in cases when the site owner is really demanding about getting special services from the volunteers.

And if this is the reason, it's a waste of time to discuss it with the webmaster. He has his goals, we have ours, there's no common interest and no basis for discussion.

(2) It hasn't been looked at. This is a very common reason -- hundreds of thousands of sites have been suggested but not looked at.

If this is the reason, it's a waste of time to discuss it with the webmaster. Any volunteer interested in looking at sites like that can do it any time he wants, without any discussion at all. That's the way the directory works.

(3) Editor abuse. This is by far the least likely reason, but ... if this is the reason, it's a waste of time to discuss it with the webmaster. What can he do about it anyway? Nothing. It's a job that the ODP meta-editors and administrators will have to resolve: once we have a pattern of abusive actions to look at, we have the tools to investigate, and the authority to take whatever action is needed.
