I have to agree with pvgool on this one. Sure, competition can and may sometimes delist others (it's human nature to protect your own, I guess). But then again, it's easy to make statements like this and accuse others of such behaviour without having to support such statements. If you think about it, some categories would then have 2-3 listings that the editors own / run and the rest would get kicked out. That's not what I've been seeing on DMOZ, though.

To paraphrase your own statement, when a number of folks are expressing their concerns about possible abuse and are immediately met with responses like this, it tends to tell more about the person responding in this way than the people expressing their concerns.
Perhaps you were just having a bad day but that's really pretty sad.
