(This is thread drift and should probably be moved elsewhere.)

Meta editors review new editor applications.

I can tell you this: There is virtually no way that a new editor is going to be approved for Sports/Baseball. It's too big. You need to look to a smaller category (less than 100 sites or so) to start in.

bad content

http://dmoz.com/Sports/Baseball/Directories/

1. Mike McKee's Major and Minor League Baseball Links (visit their site and you will find that 90% of it doesn't work. The site is not even updated to 2004. This is not good quality and turns visitors away).

2. BaseballJump.com (page cannot be found; few days now).

3. Top20Baseball.com (visit their site and you will find that 90% of it doesn't work. This is not good quality and turns visitors away).

Does anybody read those reports?

I've posted report #470 exactly one week ago, still no reaction. I understand writing reviews is time consuming but deleting entries should be easier, shouldn't it?

Meantime I've discovered a lot more bad entries, they seem to occur in many romanian language categories. I wonder whether is a point in spotting those while the editors won't seem to bother much.

Yes, they are read. They require someone who has access to the categories and can read the language to investigate them. Even if the changes had been done immediately, you wouldn't see any change in the public pages for at least a couple of days.

Thank you for reporting the problem listings. Please do not construe lack of perceived changes as a lack of activity or of interest. Please do continue to report problem links.

I dealt with items 1 & 2 in #470, but someone who understands the language will have to move 3 & 4 to more appropriate categories.

I still do not understand how it doesnt meet guidelines also I understand you will not disclose this information as well. I do believe this is quite unjust to remove us from the directory for so called affiliates and if it is not considered unqiue then what is?

Apparently some or all of editors clearly feel our site violates one or more of these rules. If that is so then maybe someone can shed some light on this.

1. How are these 2 sites considered unique?

They run multiple domains. Heck one even runs a flat frame, which used to until just a couple weeks even framed to a common URL, now it just runs the same dll! But this isn’t considered Duplicate content?

http://www.americas-christmas-cards.com/ which is the same company that runs http://www.1st-class-christmas-cards.com/

1st class is listed in dmoz

1st Class Cards, Inc. - Business holiday cards. Includes catalog and company biography.
-- http://1st-class-christmas-cards.com/ Shopping: Gifts: Stationery: Greeting Cards: Christmas (1)

The content of this site except for the "Doorway" Page is the same content across all the sites listed below
It even used to frame into americas-christmas-cards.
Not too mention he has links to all of his other domains and affiliates in his link pages.
But according to editors this is not considered duplicate content?

The main frame is EXACTLY the same across every site!

http://www.1st-class-christmas-cards.com/
http://www.americas-christmas-cards.com/
http://www.americaschristmascards.com/
http://www.premier-holiday-cards.com/
http://www.americas-thanksgiving-cards.com/
http://www.1st-class-birth-announcements.com/
http://www.1st-class-wedding-invitations.com/

Not to mention they have hundreds of unrelated links. Which in itself is considered by 2 PhD's at Stanford is considered SPAMMING

2. DesignCrafters is another good example. Yet they are listed in ODP:

Design Crafters - Personalized holiday cards, with foil lined envelopes, choice of verse and ink selections.
-- http://www.designcrafters.com/ Shopping: Gifts: Stationery: Greeting Cards: Personalized (1)

These sites are affiliates, non-unique from site to site if ours is:

http://www.designcrafters.com/
http://www.corporatebirthdaycard.com/
http://www.thank-you-card.com/
http://www.patrioticcards.com/http://www.thanksgivingholidaycards.com/
http://www.jewishholidaycard.com/

Url spammed into their sitemap with keywords. One company many affiliates. But the answer is these are acceptable???

In closing this is exactly why, in my humble opinion, ODP is dieing. I agree with the logic of openness but its hardly open at all.
The political nature of how an editor can have his own website with a nice neat description listed in ODP, but most submitters are lucky to even an accurate description or a correct URL link.
My guess is if Google didn’t use ODP it wouldn’t have lasted this long. Most commercial sites wouldn’t even bother trying to get a listing here at all.

But my guess here this listing will be deleted as soon as one editor reads it. That just proves my point ODP is not open at all.

You misunderstand what we mean by unique. We do not mean unique across the entire WWW, we mean unique with our directory. Just because a company operates multiple mirrors with the same content (or has an affiliate program so lots of other people have sites copying their content) does not mean that the ODP will not list the site. We just want one copy of that content listed, not multiple copies. That is what we mean by unique content.

Your two examples show you do not understand this. We have one site out of each group of mirrors listed, from what I can see. This is exactly what we want to do, which is have one unique listing for companies like this. Once that one listing is in place, then we start rejecting/removing mirrors with the same content.

Wrong on both counts. We'd do just fine without the bother of commercial site owners trying to "game" their sites into our directory, and your post just got moved to where it would have belonged, if there had been actual abuse instead of just your misunderstanding of what we mean by "unique" and "duplicate" within the context of the ODP.

If either of these companies were to have multiple listings within the ODP, please let us know and we'll fix it -- Foe

467 through 493, some were already done, now the rest are, except that 470 and 480 require knowledge of Romainian.

URL changed - update listing not working for several months

Hi there,
In
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Storage/Optical/

This is a old URL http://www.primeratechnology.com

Listing: Primera, Inc. - Manufacturer of a thermal CD printer, ink-jet color CD printer, an optical disk duplicator, and CD autoloader for printers.

New URL http://www.primera.com

With the Update Listing tool I get:

"Bad category
You may not submit your site to this category.
Please go back in your browser if you need to resubmit the form."

I've tried moving up to the parent cateogry with no success. I've tried contacting the editor directly. No success.

Can you help?

TIA
Paul

There was a problem with that category. I changed a few things and I managed to get the an update request to go through for your URL. I also processed the request while I was there since there's no reason to have the wrong URL in the directory :)

Unbelievable abuse

This is the worst I've seen in DMOZ yet - all of the following links redirect to the same page - which has nothing to do with the titles, description or categories they've spammed here:

Actually, there's thirty five of them and it would be far too time consuming for me to list each link and each category, I apologize.

Search for "tradeeasy" - I checked the first page of results and they all redirect to the same page - a page that's not even listed in DMOZ.

I for one would appreciate the removal, entirely, of any entity that abuses this system so openly. Thank you.
