Hello,
I submitted our site a few times over the last year or so. We have never heard anything in regards to the site. The most recent site submission was in mid-September I believe. Since then I have e-mailed the editor a couple of times and received no response. Could you please tell me the status of my listing. Here is the category that I submitted to in September.

Thank You,

I am sorry but I cannot seem to find your site in the unreviewed area of the category you mentioned. I can see that in August a submission was deleted as a duplicate which should mean that one would be left but where that is I do not know and I cannot find it. You should resubmit the site to the category you mentioned and if you have not been listed in a month bump this thread and get a status check. Once you have submitted there is no reason for you to resubmit. If you are waiting the only thing resubmitting does is overwrite your previous one and knock you to the end of the queue when it is sorted by submission date.

Oh Man!!!
Thank you very much for the advice I will re-submit today and be back in a month if I don't hear anything.
I just noticed that the editor who was there (Dave Copping) is no longer listed as editor for this category. Does this mean that no one will see that I have submitted the site? Or will someone else become the interrim editor of this category?

Thank you for all your help... wish I had found this site months ago :)

Many dmoz.org categories do not have editors. That does not mean that nobody manages them. Editors higher up in the directory tree as well as editall editors who can edit anywhere in the directory handle these types of categories.

Hello,
Chad Stewart here again. I re-submitted our site a month ago as thehelper suggested, but we still don't show at DMOZ. Could you please tell me the status of our site:

Chad,

No change on the status, I'm afraid.

However, I do have a suggestion for you: Since you have a business address in Olivet, MI, you could also suggest that your site be included in the category http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Michigan/Localities/O/Olivet/

This should in no way negatively influence the category you mentioned, and will give you a better chance of having at least one entry in the directory, and somehting that represents you in your local community. Neither categories will promise a listing, of course.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much Alucard. That is a very good suggestion.

One question tho, I was under the impression that you could only submit a site once and if you re-submit, it will remove your prior post. Am I incorrect, or is there something special that I must do to make our site elegible for 2 categories?

Yes, generally the limit is one category [called a topical category] related to the contents of the web site, however, in addition to that one, many sites are also allowed a Regional listing, if they have for example a store, a manufacturing company, etc. at a physical address.

In this case, the sugeestions to the two categories are independant and one does not effect the other.

We have you logged as submitting 09/Feb/2004 - the submission is eligible for a status check after 09/Mar/2004.

Hello Folks,
Some good news and some bad news:

Good News: We got into the regional directory. Thanks again for the suggestion, Alucard.

Bad News: We still don't show up under our preferred category - or any category for that matter other than the regional. It has been 3 months now.

Could you guys please take a look and let me know the status of this?

BTW - Is there anything in place that looks for these types of things - like no activity by an editor - and pushes these submissions up to a different editor until they get handled? I have this feeling that my submission is one of very few in my field waiting to be checked. If there are more than a few, it is because it has been a very long time since somebody has went through them. Is there any way to see when the last time a site was added / rejected from a directory?

I guess what I'm getting at is that if there is no editor presiding over my category, and no other editor gets the crazy notion to go check out fluid connectors, won't my site sit out there forever? :D

Thanks again for all your help,

Be very VERY careful even making jokes about paying editors to list sites. You know how mentioning bombs at airports can get you into trouble? That's a REALLY good analogy with this, believe me. If I were you I would edit that post VERY quickly.

One of the truly sad aspects that I find about the ODP is the lack of people willing to spend a little of their time contributing to the directory. Maybe the nature of the internet has moved away from such ideals to a "give-me" world, where everyone expects others to do things for them.

The result of this is that there are definitely parts of the directory which are under-maintained - it falls to a team of so-called editalls to maintain a HUGE number of categories. Even if they had all the knowledge required to edit in the category, there is no way they can keep up.

It is against this forum policy to discuss the inner workings of the ODP - but the basis is that the editors that volunteer their time are allowed to do whatever they can to try to help the directory be a better one. It is imperfect, and things fall through the cracks. But it is something we are aware of - in fact there is a discussion going on in the internel editor forums right now about this issue (but in a different context).

I kow this doesn't help your situation, and I don't mean to excuse it, either, but this is the nature of the ODP.

Oops - forgot to give you the status... it appears that some editor went through and deleted the submission - and it appears that that was in error, so I have added it back again.

Thanks for the honest response on this Alucard. Also thanks for your suggestions :)

I actually applied to be the editor of the category I am submitting my site to, but I got denied - conflict of interest or something :D

Basically you are telling me that I'm stuck until an edit-all wanders into my section of the directory, which given my category, doesn't have very good odds.

Soooo.....
Should I continue to bug you guys once a month, or should I just give up checking on it?

Thanks for the honest reply to my questions Alucard. And thanks for all your suggestions. I actually applied to be editor of my category, but I got denied - something to do with conflict of interest. :D

As to the the submission status:
I can't believe an editor actually found it :)

Thank you for putting it back :D

Wonder why it got deleted. Guess it doesn't matter now tho, unless they come back :(

I was just going to ask you if I should stop dropping by once a month, but obviously there is need. Thanks again for everything.

Take Care,
