Hi Jim,

I appreciate your response, i have deliberately not mentioned the particular section for which i had applied, so as not to prejudice any future applications. But it is rather specialised - and to be honest yes you would have to have worked in this particular industry to be able to be an editor.

Obviously you are correct in what you say that however knowledgable it does'nt make you an editor - it's a skill in itself of course, this can be seen from the way that the editors express themselves in rejection mails:

Reviewer Comments:

mmm... nothing as usual, well no special skill required there then.

I suppose you can argue that the editors are just too busy to give a reply to the people who want to help them be less busy.

I think insulting the editors who review applications will get you nowhere.

There are many well meaning and genuine editors who contribute to this but i fear that individual editors in some sections more than likely run their own websites and the idea of allowing somebody from a similar website to become an editor in 'their' area is not going to happen.

Just to highlight on the 'their' area comment. There is no such thing as an area 'owned' by any editor. No single editor, named or otherwise, 'owns' a category. Okay they may have permission too edit there but it is by no means 'their' area.

Furthermore editors who edit in the same area to which you are applying (even if it is the very same category) have absolutley no say in editor applications whatsoever. Applications are processed my 'meta editors' and they alone make the decisions without input or feedback from other editors.

Old Crone,

I'm not seeking to insult anyone - it's merely frustration.

But, at the same time i have no intention of ingratiating myself in order to become an editor.

I am just reflecting on my experience, which appears to be not just my own experience of ODP.
