Time required for a site to be listed?

Hi
I submitted my site about 6 weeks ago and it's not listed yet. Can anyone tell me if that's normal, or maybe I've done it incorrectly. Since I've never had any contact from an editor, I'm thinking it's the latter.

Can anyone tell me how can I find out if I need to resubmit?

Read the forum FAQ page - lot's of good stuff there.

If your submission attempt finished with a confirmation do not resubmit.

I can't remember if there was a confirmation. I sort of feel like I'm in limbo, unable to do anything, and not knowing. Is there any way to find out if my submission went through? If it went through, then I know eventually something will happen. If it didn't I'd like to submit again.

We can't force you not to spam, but the submittal policy serves your best interest as well as ours.

Is there an alternative to resubmitting? Is it spamming to send a resubmit after 6 weeks with no indication one way or the other?

I'm new to all of this so please don't take it the wrong way. I'm just trying to learn.

Yoiu do understand that it can take more than three years for us to even look at a given site, so your expectation that something would happen is very very far our of line with reality.

Further, we do no notifications of any type, for any reason, so the fact that you have heard nothing means the system is working exactly as designed.

So, if I understand correctly, one may not have submitted correctly, you may not have received the submission, and one would never know.
What does a person do.
Just resubmit every three years or so and hope to live long enough to see it happen?

When you suggest a site you will receive a confirmation screen. If you have seen this screen the suggestion has been received. Someday one of the editors will look at the suggested site and decide if it is worth listing. When this day will be. Nobody knows.

So submit once and only once more, it isn't spamming to do that one more, and the chances of 2 submissions getting lost are 1 in 10,000 apparently.

That's one attitude to take, and it is workable and realistic and not inimical to the ODP. (I wish more people would.)

It may shock you to know that some editors have math degrees and figured this next bit out for themselves already: the fact is, whichever site you're reviewing at the moment, there are 19,999,999 million webmasters frustrated because it's some other site than theirs. That's life.

You can do nothing -- and frustrate 20 million people because you aren't doing what they want. Or you can do your best for the surfers, and try to help teach the site promoters to do their own math and set reasonable expectations.

i dont know of whatever technical limitations you have, but perhaps an automated email after correct submission would be possible. Maybe the small cost of implementing this would be offset by the (presumably not so small) cost in terms of editor time caused by uncertain webmasters double-submitting.

Automated emails have been suggested and rejected over the years (there've been few discussions in this forum even on the subject).

If you get a confirmation screen why would you need an email? Just print off the screen. There is enough useless email going around without adding to it. There is no cost to editors in uncertain webmasters double-submitting. If it was waiting then it is overwritten, if it was lost then it is added to the pending pile.
