I am trying to submit a new URL and when I finally hit the submit button I get the following message.

------------------------------------
Sorry, we could not determine the IP address of your browser.
Please go back in your browser if you need to resubmit the form.
----------------------------------

I have tried several times but am unable to get past this point. Could you suggest the possible problem. The URL is www.gigatest.com

Thanks,

Doyle

The question before you was the same , so I stole the answer from him :D :D

That message usually means you are submitting behind a proxy. You should try to submit again from a different computer. If you are submitting from work try to do it from home. If you have a personal firewall up or something try to disable it to submit.

Thanks for the quick reply, I must have missed the other thread.
I thought the problem might be something like that. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't sending the same thing over and over before I tried another computer or network.

There is no way I expected you would have found it, the thread started out about something else entirely, I just happned to read it right before yours. It's just one of the funny coincidences that happen here. :)

I have had the same message today and despite disabling the Kerio Firewall I still cannot submit. I'm stumped.

You should try another computer or network. Proxies are common. You are getting caught in our anti-spam measures. Not that your submission is spam but the submission software wants an IP address to log with the submission, and unless it gets one the submission will not go through.

What you can do though if you continue to have problems is post the category you want to submit to here and I or someone else will probably go ahead and submit it for you.

Thank-you for your offer of help.
I have no access to any other computer so I am going to wait a day and see what happens tomorrow.
I would consider dumping Free Kerio and getting a real firewall (read pay for it) do you have any recommendations?
Thanks again.

Something wrong with IP address recognition?

Yes tried this from three different domains, one in US, one in Australian on in Hong Kong. Is all cases I could see my IP address being registered in the Apache server logs of a site I administer. Also as a test, http://www.whatismyip.com always returned an IP address from each of my test domains. I think there is more than restrictions due to proxies, something seems broken?

It could be. Posts piling up like this from different people all of a sudden having the same problem sometimes are indicitave of some sort of technical problem. Maybe one of the Hamsters died? Will look into it.

I encountered the same error about IP Addresses

I encountered the same error,
"Sorry, we could not determine the IP address of your browser."
from 2 different machines, both using DSL, both with identifiable IP addresses.

I am trying to submit the site: "http://www.EyecareFortCollins.com"
to the directory: "Regional: North America: United States: Colorado: Localities: F: Fort Collins: Health"
with a title "Eyecare Associates provides eyecare to families in northern Colorado".

I would appreciate it if an editor would submit the site for me, or tell me how I can get around the IP Address problem.

Thanks,
Mike

If you want us to submit the site for you - you are going to have to make the category you submitted to clickable. Go to that category in dmoz.org, then copy the url from the address box at the top of your browser and paste the link in a message here.

Me too, me too!

I'm having the same problem. I'm going to chalk it up to a technical problem and try again later, but I thought I'd just let it be known that somebody else is experiencing problems.

Also what kind of error message is that? "Unable to identify IP address of Browser" - that doesn't make any sense.

Thanks for the confirmation. I think the message is fairly clear: it's trying to identify your computer by its IP address, which theoretically it should have in hand -- no web pages could be sent to it. It apparently does that to keep track of multiple computers that are submitting sites at the same time -- a technological decision that avoids dependence on browser technology (e.g. cookies) not generally available (dmoz.org is more offbeat-browser-friendly than any other major site I know).

But the flip side of that decision is that as the IP addressbook filled up, more ISPs have begun to run proxies in various inconsistent ways. If the proxy will not hold still for long enough to complete the "add url" transaction, then ... it reports several different IP addresses, and dmoz.org servers don't know which one to believe.

dmoz.org has changed a couple of times over the last year to accommodate the odd proxies. This may be yet another mutated proxy. Please tell us all about your browser configuration, local computer, local network, and ISP, and we'll pass the information back to our technical people.

I'd say it's a technical problem. I'm not behind a proxy and have a static IP address, and I'm getting that same error now also. (I did some test adds last week and didn't have that problem). Sounds like everyone might be getting the error. I'll make sure it's reported internally.

Thanks for your offer. I have had the same problem, and signed up to the forums to see if I was the only one. I'd like to take you up on your very kind offer. Thank you.

I'm trying to submit to http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Uni...yers_and_Law_Firms/Labour_and_Employment_Law/

and the details as on the Submit form are as follows:
"
www.EmployeeSolicitors.co.uk

EmployeeSolicitors.co.uk

We are No-Win No-Fee UK Solicitors who only act for Employees. Can we help you? If so, please visit our site to find out more.

PO@EmployeeSolicitors.co.uk
"

Many thanks again,

Patricia

I have added Patricia's request to the unreviewed area of that category.

If anyone else needs this to be done, please provide a CLICKABLE link to the category and all of the information - proposed title, description, email contact address

Thanks.

Problem Behind NAT

I am getting the same error. I tried on two separate networks. One is your typical cable modem service with a router that runs NAT. The other was a t1 tied to a router with NAT. In both cases the router has a static ip address so that should have been picked up. It is not a proxy like AOL where the ip would change. They would know the ip of the network, just not the individual computer.

I think there is a technical glitch.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated.
