I want to know if I can apply to be listed on the DMOZ for a domain that is similar to one already registered.

Currently, I have www.disklabs.com www.disklabs.nl, on the DMOZ, but have just agreed with a company over in the US to partner up with us. They have just registered www.disklabs-USA.com .

The site will be similar to that at Disklabs.com, but not the same. The site will also have different text, but will principally be 'Americanified'.

I want to get this domain listed on the DMOZ, however, I dont want to upset the editors, and I cant find where this rule is stipulated.

Disklabs-USA submitting to the directory

Sorry to be a pain, but I am struggling to work out why we cant do that? We have a Disklabs.nl, and a Disklabs.com, so why not a Disklabs-usa.com?

Simple answer: It violates our rules. Your customers should be able to get to every one of your sites from a single entry point. How you do that is your responsibility. IIt is your decision to ahve multiple sites. That is fine with us, but it is NOT our obligation to list all of your sites.

Now will be exacty the right time to list here all of the others, because if we find any others submitted in the future, ones that were not declared here, then all listings are at risk of being removed.

Please list all domains that you own/control/design/do business as/relate to/etc:

I have lots to do with many sites, some professionally, (disclabs.com - worked on because some-one else bought disc-lab.com, (which is going legal at the moment), disk-labs.com - same reason, mobilephoneforensics.com, steggles.com, 1ct.com, lakenaomirentalhome.com, holidayhomerental.co.uk . Some link to the others, but as you can see, they are not all related.

I am trying to seperate the different IT sites, making them specialist in what they do, so rather than having http://www.disklabs.com/mobile-phone-forensics.asp I am trying to get www.mobilephoneforensics.com listed, so that I can simply delete http://www.disklabs.com/mobile-phone-forensics.asp from Disklabs.com which is general storage based, and not a niche, and move it to its own arena. My company has several divisions, they are not necessarily similar to each other, therefore, I believe they all require their own domains.

Please dont think I am trying to beat the system, I am not. I simply want to ensure that I use it as effectively as possible. If I am doing anything inappropriately, please let me know, so that I can correct this.

Regards,

Simon

You must decide yourself how to best run yiour company. So you aren't doing anything inappropriate. But we as DMOZ prefer to list a company only once. Only if you are active in very unrelated subjects we would consider a second listing. If you want visitors to find all your sites (and I see no reason you wouldn't want this to happen) you should link all sites to each other. Suggest your company site to DMOZ but not the sites about your different products.

That sounds fair to me, though obviously isnt going to help me with my company websites optimising - that I understand is ofcourse my problem.

I do however have issues with my competitors who seem to be flouting this rule somewhat.

I want to make everything fair, but I dont want to snitch. What do I do?

Jim,

I want to help, however, I dont want to be black marked. Some of my competitors are on the sites so many times that I even thought that something fishy might be going on. I know that you didnt want to hear that, but if you want a list of some that I found, I can get it to you.

Editors and Moderators,

I hope that here you will understand my frustration when it comes to the DMOZ. I do a bit of research, and find that many of our competitors abusing the DMOZ. Some of these have even submitted the same domain to different catagories to ensure they are more difficult to be picked up on. Domains such as www.ontrack.com , www.mjm.co.uk , www.ondata-uk.com , www.drivesavers.com , www.r-tt.com , www.stellarinfo.com , www.datarecoverygroup.com and www.dataclinic.co.uk all have the same domain submitted to different catagories. I have taken the liberty of listing them below.

I am very keen to find out your thoughts on this matter, and to know what will happen to them?

Regards,

Simon

Note that many businesses which have a "place of business" may be listed in both Regional and Topical categories. If your site qualifies, (that is, there is a location where people go to work to provide goods and services, and people come to obtain goods and services), then you may certainly submit twice -- that is a "standard exception" to the "one submittal per company/site" rule.

Hutcheson,

I will submit my site to the relevant places now, (1 each for the Dutch site and the UK site), would I therefore be able to submit to the USA site too, as people do come to our premises to deliver data, watch a data recovery taking place etc?

Are any of the companies listed in the previous correspondance listed actually doing anything wrong, or am I just being paranoid?

Regards, and sincere thanks for clearing that up,

Simon

No, if the company has different locations in Europe, it may be listed once in Regional (at the Europe level. If the company has different locations worldwide, then a Regional listing isn't applicable, although listings in multiple languages may be.

I have just looked through the list again, and some of the companies are flaunting these rules. What will be done?

Don't be concerned about other people. If there are problems with anything you posted, I'm sure someone will take care of it but it really is all irrelevent to your site.

Motza,

I dont think that last comment is correct.

We work hard to try and get our site higher up in the rankings, but we all know that the DMOZ is a very influential power when it comes to Search Engine position. If a competitor has 3 listings for the same website, (there were several of them - see previous posts), they then have an unfair business advantage. This is why I am so concerned that my business is being penalised indirectly by the DMOZ.

No one has yet explained why some of the listed businesses have multiple listings, and no one has yet said what will happen to them, (will they only be able to list one site, will they be banned)? I am now still also unclear about which overseas sites I can include in the DMOZ, as the rules confuse. I can submit to a regional site, in the UK, but in Holland I can submit as the site is in Dutch, (this is positively encouraged), but I cant submit my new USA site, even to a USA regional directory? I have to be honest, this baffles the heck out of me. I will post a seperate post about this question.

I look forward to your comments.

Simon
