We added a little anonymous poll on top of the page. Please vote to show your support for thumbshots in dmoz.org! Thanks.

Re: Add free thumbshots previews from Thumbshots.o

Some reasons, why I don't think this will be implenmented into the original ODP servers:

1) The ODP servers are -as you have seen in the past - somewhere near their limit. Implementing additional features that cost incredible loads of bandwisth to our servers is quite out of bounds, I would say.

2) There are tons of nice features that we could add. Google implements PR bars hich do some rating. As mentioned above, you are not the first one to present thumbnails to the user. There are nice maps showing the relation between sites. Since our staffs time is very limited, we usually prefer them to add features on the inside.

3) This is nothing to be decided by an anonymous vote. This is something to be decided by the ODP only. For such issues we have discussion capabilities on the inside.

You are of course welcome to use the ODP data in such a way and proudly display your quite nice additions to the public.

Hi Windharp,

Thank you for your feedback. Let me try to address some of your concerns.

1. I understand your concern with lack of bandwidth at dmoz.org. However, there is no reason why dmoz.org needs to host the thumbshot pictures. Since we have lots of bandwidth, we can volunteer to host them. We already have commitments with other mirror sites like sunsite.dk to provide more than adequate bandwidth for users. Dmoz.org will only need to include the HTML <IMG> code with the src attribute pointing to thumbshots.org. In fact, we could even mirror your entire directory reducing your overall traffic since a percentage of your traffic will now be directed to our mirrored site.

2. I believe thumbshots can bring added value to dmoz.org not available in other major directories (revive dmoz.org, improve usability, build trust, simplify editor's jobs, locate duplicate/broken links, etc.). Most importantly, it can increase the productivity of your editors. If your staff were to spend just a small amount of effort the first time integrating thumbshots (adding a few lines of HTML codes), it could double/triple the productivity of your editors in the long run.

3. I hope ODP will give thumbshots a try. Thumbshots can be integrated as an "optional feature". Users who want to see the original text-only dmoz.org will still be able to do that. Those who find thumbshots useful, as pointed out many times by editors in this forum, then they will have the added benefit. The last thing we want to see is a perfect opportunity for improvement put on the shelf. Give thumbshots a chance!

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have more questions or concerns.

Regards,

Stephen {moz}

Re: Add free thumbshots previews from Thumbshots.o

Remember that dmoz.org is not meant to be optimized for users. We are basically providing the data for others to do the optimizing. In fact, too much popularity led to our server becoming overload and impossible to work with for a while, until we finally got a few more servers. We are unlikely to get any more for a long time, so we would prefer users found mirrors or sites using the data to use regularly.

I hope that many of the mirrors out there will take advantage of what you offer, because I look it personally. In fact, if I get a site of my own going that uses ODP data, I'll probably use the thumbshots myself.

Perhaps the popularity of the site can be explained by what appears to be an unsolicited bulk email that seens to have been sent on your behalf.

Re: Add free thumbshots previews from Thumbshots.o

Dear shritwod,

I sent you the e-mail because I came across your site:

http://www.poozleanimus.com/directory.htm

listed under "Sites using ODP data" at:

http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/Open_Directory_Project/Sites_Using_ODP_Data/P/

Your page clearly has a "Contact Us" info, which is the only reason that led me to e-mail you:

"Contacting us: Email us at xxx@yyy.com with ... for any queries, corrections or additions to this site."

I apologize if you misunderstood for a bulk email, which we do NOT endorse. Every mail was manually sent by hand and not by some automated means even though we use a template e-mail. It was intended as a site feedback or friendly message to inform you of a free service called thumbshots that may interest you.

I understand how bulk email is untolerable, the fact that I put down my email on this forum, I am receiving more junk mails than ever before, but it's a decision I took to be more open and I pay that price too. :(

My sincere apologies.

Bug report

The thumnail images doesn't appear when using K-Melaon 0.7.1 (Mozilla based), but it works with Internet Explorer 6.0.

Re: Bug report

Thank you for reporting the bug liftarn.

It turns out the K-Meleon 0.7.1 relies on Mozilla 1.2BETA and a known bug in this version causing one of the events not to fire correctly. I added a thumbshot fix for this version and should be OK now. You should consider upgrading to K-Meleon 0.8, which should work flawlessly.

Thanks,

Re: Bug report

Ah.. I apologise then since you found me manually.

I did stare at it for a long while before deciding not to put it in the Spamcop sausage machine.

Clever stuff though. I bet your bandwidth bill is looking horrible though!

Just a quick note Stephen to say that I really like the idea. As theSeeker said we'd like our users to use down stream sites such as Thumbshots.org. This is one of the better ideas that I've seen with our data! Great job! I'm using Opera 7.21 on Win98SE. :)

Thank you Jordan for wanting to see thumbshots.org made available to the public. I'm glad that you find thumbshots a great idea not just for the editors!

Thumbshots.org will get even better very soon! We received lots of positive e-mails from users and editors. We are now in the process of updating/refreshing the thumbshots for the entire ODP directory.

If you find any cool uses of thumbshots, please share them with us!

Regards,

Re: Lissa's Green Google Ball

It could either be set up to switch over to thumbshots.org similar to the green Google ball ...I think that the display of the thumbshots adds value in a similar fashion to Google's display of pagerank and sorting.

I think Lissa's Green Google Ball idea is marvelous! We can work together to set a mirror site to Open Thumbshots.org to show thumbshots without using resources from DMOZ and should be easy enough to set up for you guys.

Can we have a red ball?

I would really like to see a red thumbshots ball on the categories. It is a real neat thing - very cool.

Re: Lissa's Green Google Ball

If you really want to get something official going between dmoz.org and thumbshots, you need to be talking to staff (staff at dmoz.org), not getting votes from us here. Editors can be as enthusiastic about it as they want but if you're looking for a link from dmoz.org pages, you need to be speaking to the people with the authority to do something about it.

Re: Lissa's Green Google Ball

Hi Motsa,

I totally agree with you. I'll send an email to ODP staff right away and bring up the idea of thumbshots on ODP. Meanwhile, I still like to get feedbacks from editors like you and other users about thumbshots. If you find any good uses of thumbshots, please share them with us.

Thank you for your feedback and have a good weekend.

Re: Lissa's Green Google Ball

Just for the record, I started a thread in our internal Bugs_and_Features forums discussing this idea. Please be aware that our main technical person is on vacation, so there won't be any changes (if we decided to make one) for a few weeks at least. Besides, it usually takes us a while to chew over new ideas and come to consensus anyway. :)

We can work together to set a mirror site to Open Thumbshots.org
Setting up an official mirror would probably be the best thing. There are two already: http://de.dmoz.org/ and http://ch.dmoz.org/ . Staff can provide all the appropriate details on how this works, although one of our more technical minded editors might be able to give you some insight.

The idea of linking from dmoz.org to the mirror will still be discussed separately, but it is probably more easily done if you have a mirror server set-up already integrated with our processes.
