I am reading the guidelines. Thanks a lot

I don't have editing permissions in that area of the Directory, but, if another editor doesn't clean it up when we're back up, I'll request permission to edit there myself. I may or may not be granted that privledge, but, I'll try. :)
Hopefully that happens and I won't have to wait another year to see my site there :D

I can't make any promises, of any kind. When I see a category like that, it just peaks my interest in fixing it, I may be denied that opportunity as not being experienced enough in that part of the Directory.

You see how we work? Even though I'm an existing, experienced editor, if I haven't shown the capability of editing in that area, I will be denied that privledge for the good of the Directory.

Old Sarge, <snip> By your own logic, then, ODP's own perception of what it is could be mistaken. :)

lol Ok. You want to play semantics? ;)

ODP's perception of what the ODP is logically takes precedence over what other peoples'/organizations' perceptions are. Self-determination, you know.

Old Sarge, <snip> Stick to editing, and leave the abstract philosophizing to abstract philosphers.

Hey! I represent that remark!

I consider myself something of an "abstract philosopher." Sort of like all the naysayers thinking they know what the ODP is and ought to be. :D

I call dibs on clean up of that category :D

Edited to add - this does not mean I've promised look at or add any suggested sites - I want to make it clear that a clean up typically involves only listed sites.

I have designed several websites that are indexed very well in Google and not one of them is listed in the dmoz directory. So, how would you explain that?

I would love to see the urls to make a more educated response but, I am guessing the sites are either 1. old, or 2. are ranking well for non competitive keywords. I could make a website about asparagus pie with carrot frosting and rank #1 for that keyword in a month.

Your personal website <url removed> is in fact listed in the ODP...twice may I add ... and one of the listings is a dead page. Thus proving just how overwhelmed the editors actually are. They dont even have the time to make sure their own listings are current.

Just in case you are in a really good mood whenever you do that, you may consider adding <URL Removed> :D
It should be one of the submitted sites

A firm I work with bought a dmoz listed site and the owner took the contents of the servers and trashed it! After we were told we would get every thing off their servers.

After 2 months of dealing and rebuilding the site form alternate sources the site was restored to almost near likeness, email forms and areas of security issues were changed, upgraded and or removed for the visitors protection. End result the site came out better and users have flock back to it.

In my 8 years of life online, I have never seen any site go down for this amount of time. Never, not once. Databases can be backed up and restored within minutes. This is something HUGE. My 2 cents.

Before any thing was done a systems wide assement had to be done this is a must and yes this can take time. You need to know the who what and where and in this case what happened

There was probably a very elaborate recovery plan laid out and knowing how pencil pushers work, hardware, P.O.s, man hours, and a project management schedule was implemented.

It all comes down to dollars and cents T&M and projected out come with a planned result.

I am sure that the words "pull the plug" were used by some of the bean counters.

I am very sure that systems in place that had little or no use are now being consolidated, removed or scraped.

I didn't list my site nor do I have access to where it is listed. I didn't even know it was listed twice. I'll have to check it out and get it fixed.

Only one site I developed, other than my blog, is listed in dmoz and it was listed years before I had anything to do with it. After redesigning the site it improved its placement in all the major search engines. I doubt its dmoz listing had anything to do with that improvement.

I wouldnt doubt that it helped if I were you. Google openly states that it does in fact help. Like I said before I would love to see the url and the keywords it ranks well for. I still assume that the urls are old and/or the sites rank well for non competitive terms.

Also you state that you "doubt" that it helped, should I take that as you are really not sure? That is what it sounds like. You can google about it if you like, google makes it quite public that it does help.

It is not the end all be all. If your site is garbage and poorly designed for seo a link in the ODP will not necessarily boost you to the front page. However if you do simply make some adjustments and build a half way decent website it will put you up above "better" websites with no link in the ODP.

It's on my list of things to do. I've been a little busy in other areas for the past week and I haven't quite finished all the little tasks that are, what I consider, a little higher priority. Like having an enjoyable Christmas with my granddaughter, working at my real job, feeding horses, getting reacquainted with the directory after two months of not editing, etc. But I'll get to it, probably this weekend.

I called dibs second. I cleaned the sites that I found were dead and moved those under construction (probably long gone) to unreviewed. It looks a bit better then before. avh, if you see any problems, please let us know here. :)

IMO, this would be a very good category for a new editor with an interest in building it up. I found quite a few new sites that could be added here.
