www.dogbreedinfo.com

is listed in
http://dmoz.org/Home/Apartment_Living/

for what appears to be one page, a list of dog breeds. Doesn't really seem to be on-topic for Home/Apartment_Living, though :)

www.dogbreedinfo.com has also managed to get itself listed rather often in the ODP. Of course, every page is stuffed with affiliate links, and <cough> you can almost imagine the unique content. Well, almost.

I don't see how a page that lists breeds especially suited for apartment dwellers is off-topic for a category on apartment living.

While the site doesn't hold particularly unique info in that most of it (and more accurately) can be found on the various kennel club and breeder sites it's still a useful resource and is likely the reason it was listed so often.

I don't agree it deserves "cool" status but that's a decision of the category editor and those in that section of the directory to make.

Yes there are affiliate ads on the pages but they do not really detract from the breed information content. Having ads is not a reason for not listing a site, only when they are the only or major portion of the site content.

Picking, at random, http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/jog.htm for closer inspection:

This page has 224 'content' words (and no pictures) - I'm counting the words in the links to the breeds which are supposedly 'excellent jogging companions'. [Quite apart from the fact that the 'content' on this page is really just a list of links to other pages...]

It has 608 words (plus pictures) in the affiliate links at the foot of the page, and a further smattering of affiliate links in the panel at the right hand side.

Is it normal to lists sites under Recreation/Pets where the real_content : affiliate_content ratio on pages drops as low as 1:3? Are sites with unique content about pets really so hard to come by? :-(

I suppose it's got one good thing about it - no pr0n links... yet ;-)

Well if you have the free time to do word counts on pages you should volunteer to become an editor :)

All the breedlinks on that page refer to breed info pages within the website. Had they all led to other sites then maybe it might be considered a link farm but as it is it is consistant.

Pages are judged by their content, and that means the quality and usefulness, not just or especially quantity.

Your query has been refered to those who do edit in that area for consideration and I'll leave further comment for them.

I;ve been looking at the cat: http://dmoz.org/Regional/South_Amer...Aires_City/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Hotels/
and have found a few irregularities.

1. Buenos Aires Wilton Hotel probably should just be called the Wilton Hotel.

2. Comfort Hotel gives a 403 error.

3. Crowne Plaza goes to a generic ichotelsgroup.com site.

4. Hotel Alvear should be Alvear Palace Hotel.

5. Hotel Colon goes to a download site.

6. There are 2 Hotel Intercontinental sites that eventually go to the same place.

7. Omega Hotel only, not BsAs added?

8. Hotel Torre Blanca can't be found.

9. Plaza San Martin should be Plaza San Martin Suites.

10. Savoy Hotel not found.

11. Suipacha Suites are redundant.

There are a number of hostels mixed in with hotels, and I would think should be in their own cat. I am thinking of applying for this or a similar cat to edit, although must say I've already applied for a Chilean cat and have yet to hear. Should I wait for that to clear or not.

Thanks

It would be best to wait for a response to your first application. I hope to see you fixing things on the inside. :D

In the meantime I'll take a look at hotels in a place I'll never be able to visit.

[Edited to add: dealt with, thanks.]

Venezuela...

In http://dmoz.org/Regional/Southhttp:...nd_Culture/_America/Venezuela/Maps_and_Views/
the first two, etravelphotos.com, are duplicated.

In http://dmoz.org/Regional/South_America/Venezuela/Society_and_Culture/
there are a number of sites that really don;t even belong here. But will do them in order, top to bottom.

1. Bolivarian Fund goes to http://cybercircle.org/

2. ICA - Might be useful to know what ICA stands for.

3. Latin Focus - Economic forecast, not quite S&C.

4. Lonely Planet is really about travel, not S&C.

5. Miss V. 1999 is getting a bit out of date, I would say.

6. Repubicagay - didn't see an English version.

7. Think Venezuela is a tourism site.

8. Union Israelita is a commodities trading site??

9. World Bank - is this a S&C site?

In http://dmoz.org/Regional/South_America/Venezuela/Society_and_Culture/History

1. A Brief History - not found.

In http://dmoz.org/Regional/South_America/Venezuela/Transportation/

1. Arenas Trop. not in service.

2. El Sol de America not found.

3. Flights to Los Roques is actually a travel agency.

In http://dmoz.org/Regional/South_America/Venezuela/News_and_Media/

Do you really want all of those deeplinks? Vheadline.com is actually based in Houston, Tx.

In http://dmoz.org/Regional/South_America/Venezuela/Education/

1. Colleges and Universities - Venezuela: This goes back to 1996 and is just a list of 7 urls - might be better to actually list the sites than this meager and possibly outdated list.

2. Escuela Las Morochas looks like a personal page than an educ. site.

That's all for now. :)

#871 dealt with thanks.

Latin focus - not just economic. Was probably listed in S&C for the political content, but it can be moved up a level.

Union Israelita - the site must have been bought up since it was listed and turned into a doorway.

Re deep links in News and Media: I would normally agree with you, but I'm leaving those until/unless they can be replaced with English versions of local press. Though the location of news sites is not as important as their focus. That VHeadline is based in Houston is not a problem.

In category http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/West_Sussex/Mid_Sussex/

I found that the Disability Information Services Sussex link http://www21.brinkster.com/jameshenry/frame.htm was not working.

I did some research in case the site had a new url. They moved to Peacehaven about 2 years ago and are now a part of the http://www.dialuk.org.uk/ network (who already have a regional UK listing)

They don't seem to have their own web site any more, here is their page at the Dialuk website:
http://www.dialuk.info/findadial/Fu...rg_Name=Disability Information Service Sussex

Also on the same Mid Sussex regional category:

http://thisismidsussex.co.uk/ now redirects straight to http://www.theargus.co.uk/

The same thing happens with http://www.thisisbrighton.co.uk/ which is listed in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/East_Sussex/Brighton_and_Hove/

Whilst it is probably appropriate for the newspaper to be listed in both places (they publish separate hard copy editions for each area) maybe the direct link and correct title should be there?

All other Mid Sussex links seem to be working correctly.

#875 dealt with thanks. I've left the very active local editor to make final decisions on these issues, having drawn his attention to them internally.

#876 dealt with thanks.

Couple of minor fixes needed:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/West_Sussex/Burgess_Hill/

St Andrew's Church http://www.andrewschurch.fsnet.co.uk/

now redirects to their new url:

http://www.standrews-burgesshill.org.uk/

The Royal British Legion page http://www.communigate.co.uk/sussex/burgesshillroyalbritishlegion/

has a note that it is no longer actively updated, but there seems to be plenty of still useful information there, perhaps a comment needs adding to the description?
