Thank you for your most obvious reply
But really, i am an it technician with a few years of experience in fixing problems, i cannot think of any (technical ) problem that should take more than a few days to resolve normally they are fixed in no time.
But since it doesn't matter what i say or if i offer my help i will sit and wait.
Is there a newsletter where i can subscribe about this problem?

No there is no newsletter, just the announcement thread.

Once the problems are fixed and checked out, normal service wil resume. Until then all of us (yes we editors are frustrated too :) ) will have to be patient.

With 22 years of IT experience I have seen several of these big problems and can think of many reasons that could cause them.

We will publish news in the announcement threads in this forum.
But only real news. So until you see a notice just imagine to have read `no news at this moment`.

Other Options?

Are there other directories that have the clout of a DMOZ listing?

I'm impressed that with all the whining, no one's suggesting any alternatives...

And how does the DMOZ survive?

I would gladly hear your reasons but in my line of IT experience these long term problems are absolutely not accepted.
Problems must be solved not kept alive.
If neccesary you have to find a quick workaround , backup, alternative, while working on the long-term problem. I always try keep my problems hidden from the public (while fixing them).

As far as I know DMOZ does not have a special clout.

> I'm impressed that with all the whining, no one's suggesting any alternatives...
It depends on what you define as alternatives and on which subject it should be an alternative.
A list of other directories can be found through
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/

> And how does the DMOZ survive?
By being the biggest and best human edited directory.

Ah, but we did. Within a few days dmoz.org was running again and our (real) users were able to use the directory as if nothing happened.
The only thing that is not available is the editor server and the tasks running on it. This is a big discomfort for the editors and a small discomfort for webmasters wanting to suggest their site (although some webmasters seem to think it is of big importance to them).

Unlike you we don´t like that kind of secrecy.

<changed> typo, thanks makrhod for noticing

Yes, actually there is a way you can subscribe to the thread using RSS feeds, most modern day browsers support it (now that IE7 is out)...

http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/external.php?type=RSS2&forumids=15

that should ask you or give you the option to add the RSS feed, if not, then on the top right of the screen you should see this icon: http://www.ext.upmc.fr/urfist/rss/gif/firefox.png

or you can go to the "site down" thread and click on the "thread tools" then click "subscribe" then you can get notified by email.

Thank you for a very helpfull answer! Indeed this worked i am now subscribed.
Great advice you can be an example for some editors here.

PVGOOL>> I think you are missing my point, it's not secrecy, it's just service!
Why should the general public ( everybody except for the system administrators) be aware of this problem?
If the aol technical staff had made a workaround for everybody working in any way with dmoz (also for editors and link submitting webmasters) nobody would have noticed their lack of problem solving capabilities.
Like i said it isn't secrecy it's a service to us all.

As has already been mentioned numerous times, we do not have an ETA at this time for the resolution of the problems.

That sounds about right, bibilyana, we haven't been able to do any editing in that time frame, either. :) So, we're all waiting together. We have no say in what AOL considers their priorities should be, and they own the ODP.

Thank You both for answering me so quickly. I wish you a wonderful holliday and, when you say we should wait together - we should wait and celebrate together :D

Patiently waiting.

I have been reading threads and discussions for a while now, and am actually suprised at how many people either ignore or do not read the announcements thread(s). I am sure that the editors are tired of repeating their responses time and again.
Hopefully DMOZ, after it's long nap, will come back refreshed and ready for action.
In closing let me say...Thank you to all of the editors for your past and current efforts. Your dedication is appreciated.

So, I will speak for myself alone and say that I am patiently waiting for the add URL facet of DMOZ to be functional again. :)

Respectfully,
Briley

Thank you, mcloset02, we appreciate your support. We're hoping it won't be much longer, the editing community is very anxious to get back to work, :) .

When is submit URL expected to be working?

When is the submit url and other functions of dmoz expected to be working?
Its been 2 months saying
"We apologize for the inconvenience while we resolve technical problems. Please check back in a day or two."

When are those day or two expected to get over?

Yes it is frustrating for all of us, but when we have more news the Announcement will be updated.
Of course it's not compulsory to check back as often as that. ;)

A minor point, but one that seems to be at the root of a lot of misunderstandings so I'll clarify it:

It's not "Submit URL", it's "Suggest url".
