Thank you for the heads-up on the broken links - I have removed them from the category. Much appreciated.

And, as a note, even though I suspect you were joking - we ALWAYS have room for good quality new sites, no matter how many are listed. :)

It was most certainly a joke, as DMOZ does bring together a fine assortment of sites.

That was a speedy response time with removing those broken links - I'm assuming that the system must update before the actual changes take effect, as the links are still showing on my end.

In any event, hopefully that makes room for some new ones.

Thanks again!

Yes, the so-called "public pages" get generated after the fact - usually it's quite quick, but it very much depends on how many changes are being done at the time.

Most editors will treat broken content in the directory with a VERY high priority, so you will tend to get a fast response time, yes. :) The last thing we need is a directory where users are just faced with broken links when they try to find something.

Hi Nea,

Thanks for the update.

After many months, I noticed that an editor took a glance at my website several weeks ago for the first time. Is it typical for this to happen with no result afterwards? Also, is it possible to find out who the editor is for the category that I'm hoping to become a part of?

Thanks in advance for any information that you may be able to provide.

Best regards

It is, yes. The editor might have looked through the waiting sites to see if any of them were dead links or unsuited for that category, for example; that happens quite often (and there are even automatic tools that can do the checking for dead links, so it need not have been an editor.)

If you look at the bottom of the category page there will either be a text inviting people to volunteer to edit the category, or else the name(s) of the editor(s) for that category will be displayed. If there are no names there it does not mean that there is no editor - and if there are names, it doesn't mean that one of those people will necessarily be the editor who looks at your site... in any given category there are several hundred editors who have privileges to edit there.

Clear as mud, right? :monacle:

Yup, clear as mud

So, there is no real way to contact an editor who would be well-suited to offer any help?

Thanks for your fast and informative response.

Best regards

It is complicated - I agree. Simple answer it that different editors go around doing different things besides just a straight review. Some are doing quality control, some just shiftinf sites to better categories, some removing duplicate submissions, some checking as to whether sites actually exist, or have gone belly up, or the URL has expired.

So, there is no real way to contact an editor who would be well-suited to offer any help?

If you do you would be asking for preferential treatment over and above the other sites that are also waiting to be reviewed. Generally editors would ignore such requests, some might post a memo that you did that. I personally don;t think it's a great idea. You might run into an editor who did that because he wanted to be a nice guy, and didn't find an ethical problem with it. But then another editor doing quality control might wonder why you got preferential treatment.

Bobrat - Nea,

I sincerely appreciate the very helpful responses that you both have offered. I will follow your suggestions and not attempt to contact the category editor, although it was in no way intended to receive 'special' treatment, rather just 'some' treatment. It is just very easy to feel rather lost in the process of having a site submitted to DMOZ.

Kind regards

I understand your feelings. But you need to see things from our point of view - every submission that we have is a plea to give that site 'some' treatment - none of them are to be ignored. Editors review sites based on a lot of factors - knowledge of the subject matter, time, and ease of review of a site.

There really is nothing you can do but wait, as far as your ODP submission is concerned.

Would someone be kind enough to provide a status update for this 10/28/03 submission?

Thanks in advance
